Why the New York Giants Need to Bring Back Their Former 2014 First-Round Receiver

NFL

Few names in Giants history are more beloved by fans than Odell Beckham Jr.'s. Nearly 10 years after his legendary rise with the G-men, the possibility of a reunion feels realistic. The question has arisen from Giants fans and analysts alike. Is it really worth bringing back the man who once led this Giants offense?

A Mentor the Giants Have Been Looking For

The New York Giants have been searching to improve offensively. While the team has already added new pass catchers such as Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin, and Isaiah Likely, none have Beckham’s experience. Beckham is familiar with the organization, having spent his first five seasons in New York. He has evolved from a young, problematic receiver into a polished veteran who can advise younger players. The Giants' receiving room needs guidance, as none of their receivers are even into their thirties yet. Beckham could mentor these younger players, sharing his knowledge and work ethic.

Talent Still Remains

Even at this stage of his career, Odell is still able to bring talent to the Giants, something they are definitely looking for more of. When he's on the field, he's a guy who can still make those unbelievable catches he became so known for, even showing it off at Tom Brady's recent flag football game, which caught the attention of many teams. While he may not have the speed and explosiveness that he once had, his ability to catch the ball is something that will never fail. While Beckham likely won't be the star he once was, he himself even stated he would be ready to take on a number two or three wide receiver role on the depth chart.

Filling the Giants’ Needs

Of course, any potential veteran reunion comes with questions– durability, role, and expectations. Yet the upside here is something the Giants should roll the dice on. The Giants aren't just missing production; they are also missing presence. Beckham is a player who can give you both. For a franchise trying to get back in football's good graces and make a postseason playoff push, this move would excite fans and players. Not many players lit up thousands of fans like Beckam did. Signing him back wouldn't just be to make fans happy, though; it would be bringing back a light this organization needs. At the right price, there should be no question of why you don't pull the trigger on this trusty veteran.
