How the 2026 Packers Can Fix Their Running Back Problem
Running back Josh Jacobs has been at the center of news around the NFL, all for the wrong reasons. Earlier this week, Jacobs was arrested on domestic abuse charges. The running back has since denied the allegations and was released from jail without criminal charges being filed. More recently, however, dispatch audio has been obtained, with yelling and screaming heard in the background. The investigation continues to be active and ongoing, with the future of Jacobs’ football career in jeopardy. The Green Bay Packers have decided to withdraw from making a statement and allow the authorities to do their job. Now, with the offseason for the Packers off to a bad start as they look to return to form, a question remains: What might they do at running back?
In the worst-case scenario that Jacobs is traded or released from Green Bay, head coach Matt LaFleur will be forced to make changes at the position. Luckily, some options include running back Austin Ekeler. The 31-year-old tore his Achilles tendon last year, but is geared up and ready to go in 2026. In his previous eight seasons, where he was healthy, he has totaled 43 touchdowns for both the Los Angeles Chargers and the Washington Commanders. Ekeler would provide a much-needed veteran presence for the running back room in Green Bay and take any pressure off finding another suitable replacement. LaFleur may also choose to rely on what he already has, and that’s in running back MarShawn Lloyd.
Lloyd was drafted by the Packers in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but has yet to make an impact for the team. The former USC Trojan has dealt with his share of injuries since joining the team, which has prevented his ability to grow on the field. Lloyd is set to be healthy going into this season, where his availability may be needed more than ever, with a chance to find his place in the NFL. Running back Chris Brooks will also have an opportunity to take a bigger role for the team, having only totaled 106 yards last season. Brooks was signed to a two-year, $4.8 million deal in free agency, so his future could hang in the balance based on his performance this year. LaFleur has options, but the situation regarding Jacobs will continue to be closely monitored as the NFL season is just three months away.
