25-26 Champions League Ends: All the Season Highlights

The best of the best did not disappoint. Another Champions League has come to an end with a climax that definitely lived up to its name. What is most likely the most competitive club soccer league in the world came to a close today, serving as a prologue to the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which already has everyone buzzing with excitement. As we reminisce on yet another great soccer season, it is nothing but appropriate to highlight the greatest moments of this year’s edition. While you celebrate and prepare for the World Cup, take a small break to look back at the key events that marked this season.

PSG Win Back-to-Back Champions League Titles

Today’s match was certainly one to remember. Arsenal’s Kai Havertz scored against Paris Saint-Germain in the first five minutes, putting the Parisians in an uncomfortable position. A second-half goal by Ousmane Dembélé equalized the scoreboard. The scoreboard seemed paralyzed as the match went into overtime. No team yielded ground, and the game ended in dreadful penalties. When things seemed as tight as ever, Gabriel Magalhães missed a shot for the Gunners, settling the penalty score 4-3 in favor of PSG. Luis Enrique’s team once more proclaimed itself the winner of the Champions League, and Arsenal was once again a runner-up. The Red and Blues closed a flawless season, becoming the second team ever to win back-to-back Champions League titles after Real Madrid. PSG has become a powerhouse over the last few years, showcasing quality worthy of one of the best, if not the best, club soccer teams in the world.

Frustration for the Gunners

Premier League champions had to settle for silverware once more. The Gunners yet again missed the opportunity to win their first Champions League title, but nevertheless closed out a great season in which they broke a two-decade-long major title drought. Arsenal gave a tough fight, but as it usually goes in games as tight as these, one mistake can cost you a cup. Certainly frustrating for the Gunners, they will have another season next year to prove themselves again. Mikel Arteta’s crew did not yield until the end against the reigning Champions League champions, proving themselves a worthy rival to PSG. Last year’s Champions League Final did not go this way, with PSG scoring 5-0 against Inter Milan. No need to explain that this year’s final pressured the Parisians much more.

Bayern Munich Misses Out on the Final

Bayern Munich did everything it could to position itself in the Champions League Final. A cutthroat first leg of the Champions League semifinal was barely won by PSG 5-4. The Reds were widely considered a worthy contender for the final, but an early encounter with the Parisians left them out of the tournament too soon. The second leg of the semifinals was a tie, and the Reds could not achieve a comeback. Ultimately, the scales were tilted in PSG’s favor by just one point. Both teams put on a show, showcasing their quality and demonstrating to the fans just how coveted a spot in the Champions League Final is. The German champions could have won their fourth Champions League title had they scored just one more goal, but soccer always surprises us, and the Reds will have to wait for next year’s season.

Como to Make an Appearance in Next Season’s Champions League

The Italian team is set to compete for the first time in the Champions League next season, after having a stellar run in the Serie A, placing above Champions League title holders Juventus. The Como lake-based team finished the Serie A in fourth place, showcasing incredible growth in a relatively short period of time. The I Lariani was bought seven years ago by two billionaire Indonesian brothers, Robert Budi Hartono and Michael Bambang Hartono, who made it their mission to fully revolutionize the former Serie D team. A big part of their success is attributed to Cesc Fàbregas, a former Chelsea, Arsenal, and Barcelona midfielder who came to the team as a player in 2022 and was named coach in 2024. Clearly, investing in Como has yielded fruit, and now the team is focused on making their next challenge worth their while.

Final Thoughts

New teams and new faces are set to appear in next season’s Champions League. There are many teams that left this year’s edition feeling a certain bitterness, which will surely fuel the competition next year. With the fall of household names also came the rise of the underdogs, teams that, like Como, have received an almost divine intervention, which has allowed them to rise in the ranks. Next season will be another to remember. Remember these moments, as we say goodbye to the 25-26 Champions League season.
