How the Giants Brawl Sets the Tone for the Season
The New York Football Giants have been busy for the last few weeks with their OTAs and preparing themselves for the season. They have been working hard and proving that they have what it takes before mandatory mini-camps begin within the coming weeks. They’ve been working together and showing good sportsmanship; however, at the end of OTAs, a massive brawl broke out among the Giants team. This is the second time in two off-seasons that this has happened. As well as they’ve been playing together, this moment in practice can break things down for a team within moments.
It all started with edge rusher Brian Burns and left tackle James Hudson, who was filling in for injured Andrew Thomas. The two were pushing each other and shoving. Moments before helmets came off, the two were about to get into a more physical altercation. Abdul Carter attempted to intervene to separate his teammates, but coaches sent the two men to different sidelines of the practice field.
Tensions continued when edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor got into a scuffle moments later. Thibodeaux threw the first punch, and players from both sides of the field ended up on the field in a full blown fist fight and bodies on the ground. Hudson and Burns were also right back to it again. Head coach Brian Daboll called the practice right then and there.
With how this entire brawl broke out, it is not a good look for the Giants. It actually sets the tone for the entire season. This was the one thing they were missing last season, and that was being a team. They are missing the bonding, as much as they say they have it; this basically says that they don’t. This was all after the Giants’ first team brawl breakout when they were having a mutual practice with the Detroit Lions. It was very hard for them to gain anything back, and now that this second fight happened, it will be even harder.
Everyone is currently trying to downplay the incident that happened. However, in reality, it’s huge. Burns made a public apology in the end, saying that they aren’t usually like this, and the Giants’ current quarterback, Russell Wilson, said the same thing. The Giants need to do more bonding exercise and have a better understanding of one another for this coming season, because if they don’t, it will be another 3-14 season, and that’s something that nobody wants to see.
