How the Giants Veteran Head Coach Shaped the Final 53-Man Roster for 2026
The New York Football Giants did a lot of work to round out their 53-man roster for the upcoming season. There were no surprises that came up on this year's 2026 roster. Harbaugh is no longer messing around and wants players who will put in the effort to have an explosive playmaking team again. The former Super Bowl-winning coach plans to get back to the Super Bowl. Big Blue has a chance, actually, to be decent again this coming season. Harbaugh is ready for his era in the Meadowlands.
After three preseason tests, everything came down to the final cuts as of August 28th. The longtime NFL coach is sticking with a plan. It wasn’t going to be easy, but the Giants franchise knew they were going to have to let some of these players go. One of those cuts was former first-round pick Evan Neal. The franchise wanted to put together something solid, and this offensive tackle just wasn’t doing it in any of the games. Isaiah Hodgins was also cut from the Giants roster. It had been a long time coming, but with this new head coach, it was time for them to go.
Harbaugh's first thought was how he wanted his offensive line to play out. The Giants and the former Baltimore Ravens head coach took the time to build around the team’s quarterback, Jaxson Dart. The front office and head coach watched closely to see who could make plays in sticky situations. He liked what he had seen from most. Deciding to bring back Odell Beckham Jr, Malachi Fields, and players who were able to put up big plays during the offseason. The Super Bowl-winning head coach also kept most of the rookies from this year's draft, such as Francisco Mauigoa, who has already defended well for both of Big Blue's quarterbacks.
The new Giants head coach also made sure to evaluate what needed the most work. When Harbaugh came in, there were tons of holes in the defensive line. Over the past few seasons, the Giants let plays go that should have been covered. In that area, the head coach kept the players who defended the team well. He dropped those who couldn’t do the job. In preseason games, he and the front office made sure that there were no openings for anyone to get through. Harbaugh also brought in familiar faces from his former team, including C.J. Okoye, one of Baltimore's top defensive linemen.
Special teams was also a pick for this franchise. This is one of the areas where this experienced head coach is strongest. He wanted players who could get downfield faster, and he pulled players like Jordan Stout from Baltimore. Since then, the special teams have looked more organized, just as the offensive line has. The seasoned NFL coach wanted a kicker who could get the ball in the goalpost instead of missing it on every other kick. They needed a kicker who was going to get the ball in every single time, and that said, the team chose Dominic Zvada, a player who had done it all over the summer. Ben Sauls may have been the team kicker at the end of last year, but this is a team that needs consistency. Harbaugh picked up on one thing: this team was missing something. However, he made sure the team became one during each practice, training camp, and preseason game, especially when someone got hurt on the field. Harbaugh knew what he had and made sure his 53-man roster was decent.
Big Blue is already on its way to a rebuild under Harbaugh and the front office. It was long overdue to cut those who didn’t need to be here, nor had the heart to play with the team. However, the team needed to be pushed to do better than before. This team may have more changes come before Big Blue takes on the Dallas Cowboys on September 13th on Sunday Night Football. New York is getting ready for their brand new era, and it’s about to be a truly great one.
