Injuries to the Wide Receiver Room Have Chiefs Fans Worried for the 2026 Season
The state of the wide receiver room has been a front-and-center issue for many an Arrowhead fanatic. When Kansas City chose not to select a receiver high in the 2026 draft, many in Chiefs Kingdom were beside themselves. So, any injury or missed playing time in the receiver room is magnified for many by this perceived draft miss from GM Brett Veach and the organization. During Saturday's training camp, receivers Xavier Worthy and Cyrus Allen had to leave the field in carts. Worthy, who played all last season with an ankle and right shoulder injury, the latter of which he received surgery for, had to leave the field after landing on that same shoulder on a deep ball from Patrick Mahomes. It seems his removal from the field may have been just a precautionary measure. Allen, a rising star in practice who has developed a good connection with the two-time league MVP quarterback, suffered a lower left leg injury when he collided with cornerback Kaiir Elam during special teams practice while they were working on pooch punts. While both were playing gunner and trying to catch the ball at the goal line, they ran into one another. Elam walked away from the collision, but the fifth-round rookie had to be helped off the field. Luckily, it was determined to be a shin bruise, nothing torn or broken.
When news of Worthy and Allen’s exit from practice reached Chiefs fans, there was an immediate demand that Kansas City sign Stefon Diggs. The free agent star receiver had over 1,000 yards in receptions last year in New England, and four touchdowns. However, the financial commitment could be upwards of $12 million for a one-year contract. Something else to consider, which the franchise no doubt has, is the legal issues Diggs has faced, as well as the ongoing, very public personal drama playing out in the media. With Rashee Rice already in the locker room, the Chiefs brass might not want to double up the potential for off-the-field distractions. That said, all indicators point to the Chiefs being happy, or at least content with the receivers they have now. If KC had a deep concern for the receiver position, they would have drafted a receiver high in the last draft. Though concern is warranted, it appears Rice, Worthy, Tyquan Thornton, and Allen are the likely four WR targets Mahomes will have on the field this year.
A hire in the wide receiver room that seems undervalued by some Chiefs fans is Chad O’Shea, wide receiver coach, who signed with the team this offseason. With 23 years of NFL coaching under his belt and three Super Bowl rings with the Patriots, the experience he brings to Mahomes’ pass catchers will show in their play on the field this upcoming campaign. In addition to O’Shea, the signing of reigning Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III to bolster the running back room, along with Emari Demercado and Emmett Johnson, will present a rushing attack much more effective than last year’s. With a consistent ground game that opposing defenses will have to stack the box more to stop, Mahomes will have receivers more open on the field. Some KC fans are uneasy with the receiver group, but the Chiefs will be playing with a new offensive philosophy this season that involves the run more, which will be advantageous to the receivers they have. Thankfully, it appears Allen suffered a relatively minor injury, and Worthy’s removal from the field was just cautionary. With coaches like Andy Reid, Eric Bieniemy, and O’Shea on the sidelines, the 2025 Kansas City season will prove to be an anomaly, and greatness will prevail in 2026. So, take a breath, Chiefs Kingdom; the pieces are already in place to make a run into the playoffs.
