Is a Coaching Change in the Future for the Lady Vols?

Tennessee women’s basketball has been a dominant force in the SEC conference. Head coach Kim Caldwell has led the Lady Vols through times of trial with grace and poise. However, the Vols have struggled to find their groove during the 2025-26 season, not consistently winning the games they should. They have faced some harsh criticism from their fans, some calling for a coaching change. If the Vols cannot deliver in the coming seasons, will Caldwell take the fall for it?

An Impressive Coaching Resume

Coach Kim Caldwell has really made a name for herself as a coach. Her career started at Glenville State University, where she played and led her team to a WVIAC championship. From there, she took over as head coach for Glenville and helped them win six regular-season conference championships. She was eventually hired as the Tennessee women’s basketball head coach in 2024. Her move from the Sun Belt Conference to the SEC was an impressive one. Caldwell has a calm coaching style and presence on the court. She makes her players want to be better for themselves and the team, which is how she’s been able to move up in her career.

Two Successful Seasons at Tennessee for Coach Caldwell

In 2024, during her first season at Tennessee, Caldwell led her team to a 13-0 start on the season, including an astonishing 139-59 win over North Carolina Central. They were fairly successful in the regular season as well, splitting it even with a record of 9-9. Their most notable wins in 2025 came on February sixth against UConn, who later went on to win the national title, and on December seventh against Iowa. The Vols showed a glimpse of their potential during this season, and a glimpse of how Caldwell could help them improve. In the current season, the Vols have a record of 16-12 and are ranked sixth in the SEC. They started the season 8-3 with impressive wins against Winthrop and Coppin State. However, the Vols are currently struggling through a six-game losing streak going into the SEC tournament. Despite having a successful first two seasons at Tennessee, Caldwell has the difficult job of motivating her team through the conference tournament and into March Madness.

Recent Rising Concerns About the Future of Lady Vols Basketball

The recent six-game losing streak has been a chip on the shoulder of the Lady Vols. They know they’re capable of big wins in high-stakes environments, but the recent games have not been a demonstration of that. On February 19th, 2026, the Vols lost to unranked Texas A&M despite Talaysia Cooper’s 29 points. They were looking for upsets against Oklahoma, LSU, and Vanderbilt, but did not get them. In a recent press conference, Caldwell referred to her players as “a team that’ll just quit on you.” She has not been impressed with their recent inability keep the momentum and close out games. However, this statement might have put the Vols even farther back. Senior guard Kaiya Wynn chose to leave the Tennessee women’s basketball program before the SEC tournament, in a shocking decision that left people wondering if Caldwell was to blame. Between the press conference and the departing player, Coach Caldwell has lots of eyes on her right now. There are rumors that a new head coach might be coming Tennessee’s way. Can she turn things around and get her team to believe in her, along with themselves?
