Is Help Finally Here for the Bears Pass Rush?

NFL

Chicago is finally getting reinforcement on the defense. Austin Booker has been activated and is set to make his season debut in the Week Nine matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals. Booker had an impressive preseason that led many to wonder what his role would be. Unfortunately, this was postponed as he suffered an injury that has kept him out of the entire season so far. This return comes at an important time, as Chicago needs help with the pass rush, which has been one of the biggest struggles so far. Now the former fifth-round pick has his chance to make an impact, and the Bears certainly hope he can play like he did in the preseason.

The second-year pro may have had the most hype leading up to the season. The pass rush was one of the biggest areas of concern for many fans. While the team did add Dayo Odeyingbo, there was still a severe lack of depth. Booker provided this and much more as he gave the team three solid rushers. It may not have been an elite group, but it was far more than serviceable. Once he went down, the issue became severe again.

This issue has carried into the regular season, as Chicago only has 14 sacks, which ranks as the eighth fewest in the league. Additionally, there has been very little pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The lack of pressure and sacks is a losing combination. It is made worse when the secondary is struggling to cover their opponents for long, as they are facing numerous injuries. Regardless of what the major issue is, the defense has not been as sharp. They have been able to get plenty of turnovers, but everything else remains an issue.

It may be too much to ask Booker to fix all of these issues. There are just far too many holes currently to be fixed by one player. However, his return certainly helps. He brings athleticism off the edge, which is a dire need for the Bears. Additionally, this allows the team to use a rotation of players. Not only does this protect players' health, but ideally, it allows rest between plays to save stamina and speed. Improvements also may not happen instantly, but to save the season, they need to happen sooner rather than later. This may just be the spark needed to rejuvenate the pass rush and right the tide for the defense.
