Is It Time for the Colts to Rethink Their QB Situation?

NFL

The Indianapolis Colts started 2025 on an absolute tear. Heading into Week Nine, they had a 7-1 record and were riding on a four-game win streak. A major catalyst in this start was Daniel Jones, who had seemingly turned himself from a cast-off into a franchise quarterback. Jones had put up very good numbers through eight weeks, earning himself the nickname “Indiana Jones.” In Week Nine, it seemed that it all came crashing down. In a 27-20 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jones looked like the version of himself who played his way off the New York Giants, being responsible for five turnovers.

Coming into the season, Jones was seen as a bridge quarterback while the Colts developed Anthony Richardson, who they picked fourth overall in 2023. The former Duke QB was coming off a season in which the Giants had given up on him in the middle of the season, cutting him halfway through a four-year, $160 million contract. Jones' tenure in New York was marred by inconsistency, as he led the team to a 24-44-1 record over his six years. In his tenure in New York, Jones threw for over 3,000 yards only twice, while tossing over 20 touchdowns only in one season.

After finishing 2024 with the Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis brought in Jones in a likely backup role. In August of this year, Jones was named the starter, and he took that role and ran with it. Coming into Week Nine, Jones was in the top five in the league in passing yards while tossing 13 touchdowns to only three interceptions. He looked like a completely different quarterback than the one we had seen with the Giants. His play was so good that the Colts were rumored to be interested in extending him past this year, potentially making him their QB of the future. After Week Nine, and his three interceptions and two fumble performance, it may be time for the Colts to hit the drawing board. While it’s only one week, Jones' performance was abysmal and it is cause for concern for the Colts, who have been long struggling to find their franchise quarterback.
