Is It Too Early to Tell What This Giants Rookie Quarterback Is Going to Be?

NFL

New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart has only played in one preseason game and has already gained a high grade for his performance. According to Pro Football Focus, Dart had an average rating of 80.7, which ranked him in the top ten among quarterbacks in the first week of the preseason. From what everyone has seen, he is already a promising quarterback. However, it was only one game, and he played for a quarter. Veterans Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and the Giants’ fourth quarterback Tommy DeVito all saw action during Sunday's game. It may be too early to tell if Dart’s numbers are showing up correctly, with only getting the chance to play for the rest of the first half. However, it looks like he also earned the trust of the coaches and the franchise during his time on the field.

Dart came onto the field looking strong and efficient. He is praised for his poise, ball placement, athleticism, and decision-making. This rookie was also very mobile on the field, making him a little bit more efficient. It added to his numbers, raising him higher on the list. However, there is still room for improvement in his accuracy and decision-making under pressure.

In reviewing everything from this first game, this rookie quarterback completed 12 of 19 passes for 154 yards. He passed for one touchdown and had a passer rating of 106. He also rushed for 24 yards on three carries, really showing his mobility. Dart led three scoring drives in the first half, one resulting in a touchdown caught by Lil’Jordan Humphrey, and the other two drives resulted in field goals for the Giants. He stood tall in the pocket under pressure and delivered on plays. This rookie demonstrated pocket awareness and has worked through getting over pressure during plays.

Many have also critiqued him for inconsistent ball placement and a few missed opportunities. These are the minor areas that coaches and fans will struggle with at the moment. However, these are all areas that analysts look at; every quarterback, whether new or veteran, has these issues. Dart has only appeared in one quarter, which doesn’t say much about how a quarterback plays. However, if he can make it to the top ten quarterback list in Week One of the preseason, the rest of the season may be promising for him. The Giants have a tough first few weeks of the regular season ahead of them. If the Giants put him in for a whole half during the regular season, there may be a chance that everyone can see what he can do.
