Is This Recently Released Packers CB a Good Fit for the Cowboys?
The Cowboys have a defense ready to take a major leap in 2025 after several offseason additions and coaching changes. They have revamped their pass rush, added more depth at linebacker, and even addressed their secondary through the draft. The Cowboys have been linked to several corners throughout the offseason. Packers All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander was recently released by the Green Bay Packers after the team failed to find a trade partner. Alexander will have plenty of suitors, but do the Cowboys make sense as a potential landing spot for the former Packer?
Jaire Alexander, when healthy, is one of the top cornerbacks in the league. He has exceptional man coverage ability and is a ball hawk with 12 career interceptions. Jaire struggles to stay healthy and has missed 33 games since 2021. This was likely the leading factor in the lack of trade value for the Packers. Alexander may see more interest in the open market—he is 28, and if he can pass a physical, we could see him sign a contract as early as this week. Jaire is still a starting-caliber cornerback in the NFL, and there are plenty of defensive-back-needy teams looking to finalize their roster before Week One.
The Cowboys do not have a major need for an outside cornerback. The team lost starting nickel Jourdan Lewis in free agency and never made a corresponding move directly at that position. The Cowboys may be concerned with the health of Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland, both of whom have battled injuries in recent years. Although signing another corner with injury concerns may be a lateral move, the team also drafted Shavon Revel Jr., an outside corner out of East Carolina. Revel is coming off a torn ACL he suffered last season, and there’s a chance he will not be ready for Week One. The Cowboys have several corners on the roster—some are question marks—and adding Jaire Alexander, at the bare minimum, provides depth. In the best-case scenario, he returns to his All-Pro form, and the Cowboys have one of the best cornerback trios in the entire NFL.
