New England Patriots Claim Former Giants New Jersey Native

NFL

The former Giants star Tommy DeVito may have just hit waivers yesterday, but it did not take long before another team picked him up. As of today, DeVito has officially signed on with a new team. He will now be joining the New England Patriots as their new backup quarterback. This comes as a surprise to many; however, this also doesn't surprise many who have been keeping an eye on the NFL. The Patriots have once before tried to pick DeVito up, but it backfired on them back in 2023.

The Giants waived DeVito on Tuesday when he failed to make the 53-man roster. The quarterback room was already full. Unfortunately, the Giants had no choice but to cut him. Despite how well he did previously in New York, other teams have had their eyes on him for a while. DeVito was the guy who put the Giants back together when former quarterback Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor were both out on injury. His Cinderella story continued when he was put in last season to start for the Giants after Jones left. The Giants looked to him, but even then, they still struggled for the rest of the season.

Devito had a great preseason playing for the Giants. He got to play for some time in one quarter of each of the three games that they allowed him to play in. Though he did not start, he came in as a backup. His last match let people know that he was worth it to play on the team, but many knew that this was going to be his last game as a Giants quarterback. He went 17-for-20 in his final preseason game this past week. Though everything he did for the preseason was not enough for him to cut for this season.

The Patriots had initially reached out back in the 2023 season. DeVito initially turned down the offer when it was first presented two summers ago. In that time, he was given the option, but as of now, DeVito had no choice. The Patriots have come in and claimed him since he was a free agent on the market. There is no word on what his new contract with New England is going to be, but it marks the end of his era in New York. He already has a spot with New England for the first several weeks of their season as a result of being claimed off the league's waivers.
