New York Jets Hire Experienced Play-Caller as Offensive Coordinator
The New York Jets have hired their offensive play-caller for the 2026 season. Former Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich has officially reached an agreement with the team on Wednesday to make Reich the offensive coordinator. This was the route that the team was expected to go, as they have been linked to Reich for weeks now. Fans were optimistic that it would get done, but after the Wink Martindale situation fell through, it’s relieving to see it be made official.
This hire was exactly what Aaron Glenn has reportedly been looking for: a head coach of the offense. With Glenn taking over play-calling duties for the defense, he wanted to be able to hire somebody to take care of the offense so he wouldn’t even have to worry about it. A veteran guy like Reich has plenty of experience running successful offenses, and although he’s been out of the league for a couple of years, he raises the floor for that side of the ball. The team needs stability right now, and Reich provides just that.
So what happens from here? Well, just because Reich was hired, does not mean the coaching search is finished. The team still has multiple holes at positional coaches and assistants to fill, and Reich will likely be involved in that process. A concept that has been floated around recently involves the team bringing in two of the other coordinator candidates that they interviewed. The team also interviewed Greg Roman and Darrell Bevell for the job before ultimately settling on Reich, but just because they weren’t hired as the play-caller, doesn’t mean that they can’t be on the staff. Greg Roman has had incredibly successful rushing attacks wherever he has gone, it’s everything else that he struggles with. If Reich wants to add him as their run game coordinator, it could prove incredibly beneficial. The same goes for Darrell Bevell and the passing game. Bevell has helped develop quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and although Tua may have regressed this year, he was at one point the league passing leader under Bevell. If Glenn wants to continue to stabilize the coaching staff with veterans, this seems like the logical next step, but it’s up to Reich to decide exactly who he wants on that side of the ball.
