Notes from the First Day of New York Jets Training Camp
Football is back at One Jets Drive as the New York Jets kicked off their first day of training camp on Wednesday. There are many questions that stand to be answered over the next few weeks as the coaching staff figures out what the roster and depth chart will look like. The Jets had multiple stand-out moments during their first practice back in the facility. Justin Fields and Garrett Wilson showed their chemistry hasn’t skipped a beat, the running back room looks fresh coming off a subpar 2024, and Aaron Glenn shared a text he received before his first-ever legitimate practice as the head coach that kept him pumped up throughout the day.
Garrett Wilson and Justin Fields Hook Up on Pair of Big Plays
Justin Fields had an up-and-down first day, hitting some big throws and also missing a couple notable passes. The big highlight coming out of camp today, however, was an acrobatic catch made by newly-resigned Garrett Wilson over the top of free-agent acquisition Brandon Stephens. The impressive grab wasn’t the only time the two hooked up, as Fields also hit Wilson on a long corner route for a touchdown. Their chemistry from their time in college hasn’t skipped a beat, and if Fields can take the next step in his development, Wilson could be in for a career year.
Running Back Room Shines
The New York Jets’ running game was one of the most disappointing aspects of the team in 2024. There were many reasons for their lack of production last season, but the numbers they put up were not at all representative of the amount of talent in the Jets' running back room. Although Wednesday was no-contact, the running backs still showed some juice, breaking through for some nice runs and making some nice cuts and reads in the process. Braelon Allen was a particular standout, which is great news for fans who believe he can be the type of back that David Montgomery is for the Lions. He showed some nice flashes last year, and he and Breece Hall could be a dangerous combo if they can get it right this season.
Aaron Glenn’s Wife Sent Him a Text That Carried Him Through the Day
Aaron Glenn is facing a lot of pressure to be the one who coaches the Jets back to relevance after a 15-year playoff drought. In his press conference, he shared a text that he received from his wife at 3:30 in the morning, giving him some advice that he could take into his first training camp practice. “Just be AG” is what Glenn said the message read. Glenn said that he was so pumped up after reading the message that he couldn’t go back to sleep. One of Glenn’s best qualities as a coach is his intense personality that fires up his players, so one of the best pieces of advice that someone can give him is to not pretend to be anyone else and just be as authentic as possible. That’s one of the best marks of a true leader of men.
