On Opening Day, the Red Sox Demonstrate a Path to a Successful 2026 MLB Season

MLB

With the first game of spring, the Red Sox showed exactly what they are capable of as they bested the Reds 3-0. It is fitting that Boston and Cincinnati, two of baseball’s most storied franchises, began their seasons against one another. The teams, each over a century old, claim championships, moments, and stars that help define MLB’s past. Both look to improve on promising but ultimately disappointing 2025 campaigns, where they were bounced in their respective Wild Card series. The Reds did not look bad by any means; starter Andrew Abbott threw six scoreless innings at Great American Ballpark, and the Cincinnati offense threatened to rally several times. The boys from Beantown triumphed with stellar pitching and elite run manufacturing.

‘The Pig’ Is Back

Was there even a doubt? Garret Crochet, the Sox ace dubbed ‘pig’ or ‘war pig' due to his filthy pitches, delivered his first gem of the regular season. Some fans and members of the media raised eyebrows at his slow start in Spring Training. Leaving the Reds scoreless and recording eight strikeouts over six innings set the tone for another monster season from the man who led the league in strikeouts in 2025. Maybe a Cy Young Award would make a nice addition to his resume; oink oink.

Sox Show Glimpses of Speed

The speed limit at Great American Ballpark is unclear. Surrounding roads might offer signs; perhaps a school zone is near. Regardless, the nine-time World Series champions risked breaking the law with how fast they were moving around the bases. The one recorded steal, snagged by Jarren Duran, only tells a fraction of the story. Perhaps aided by day one jitters, players up and down the lineup were charging out of the batter's box. A few managed to turn infield grounders into singles. This proved crucial as the pitcher’s duel of the day unfolded. It is the little things that will matter a great deal for the squad, and it is not just speed.

Start of a Small Ball Season

A variety of forecasts have seen the Red Sox perform quite well during their first game of the 2026 MLB season. Most predictions see them featured in the playoffs; a few even dare to include them in pennant conversations. One negative people seem to agree on, though, is that this will not be a team that hits for much power. The Sox have disputed these widely shared allegations, but, indeed, their lineup is not built for home runs. The path to some of those lofty predictions for Alex Cora and company is certainly via small ball. A well-placed bunt from Carlos Narváez in the seventh led to the first run of the afternoon. Good contact hitting, bunting, and stealing bases all aid a fantastic pitching rotation. That method led to a win on the banks of the Ohio River and is a clear guideline for the rest of the year.
