Predicting a Realistic Record for the 2026 New England Patriots

NFL

Two and a half months ago, the New England Patriots competed and lost to the Seattle Seahawks 29-13 at Super Bowl LX. While New England lost some pieces from their success a season ago in free agency, they were able to sign talent that still gives them a fighting chance to be a playoff team in 2026. A while ago, the Patriots’ opponents were revealed for the 2026 season, and even though we don’t know how the exact schedule will look week by week, at first glance, we can point out a realistic record for this team. In 2026, New England will face stronger teams, and their overall schedule will become tighter in competition. We’ll take a peek at whether the 2025 AFC Champions could clinch their way back to the NFL Playoffs or be on the outside looking in.

AFC East Division Rivals

Just by looking at the Patriots’ AFC East Division rivals, I think it’s fair to say the team can go 5-1 in those six games between the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and the Miami Dolphins. Both the Jets and the Dolphins are trying to rebuild their rosters, especially Miami, who’ve parted ways with a bunch of players this offseason. New York won three games, and Miami had seven wins during the 2025 season. The Patriots should be able to beat the Jets and the Dolphins both times they play, giving New England a 4-0 start. Buffalo should be able to defeat New England, especially at the brand-new Bills home, Highmark Stadium. Yet, it’s very likely the Patriots can get a win off the Bills as well. It happened last season, handing Buffalo their first loss of the season. With New England having a complete team, a win over Buffalo is not 100% out of the picture as of yet. That’s why 5-1 seems completely realistic.

Other Home Games

Besides the Patriots’ three games at Gillette Stadium against the Bills, Jets, and Dolphins, they’ll also play the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Pittsburgh Steelers at home. Just by looking at these other teams, Las Vegas and Minnesota are rebuilding franchises, while Pittsburgh is at a crossroads within the franchise. The Raiders have the first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and will be trying to build towards the future with likely former Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza. The Vikings signed quarterback Kyler Murray, yet with his and Minnesota’s overall struggles, it’s hard to see this team competing in a brutal NFC North Division against the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions. For the Steelers, they still don’t know who will be their starting quarterback as they still await what Aaron Rodgers will do with his NFL career. From those three teams alone, you’d have to think New England would be standing strong with an 8-1 record.

Now, against the Broncos and Packers is where I feel it gets a bit iffy. Green Bay did lose a few pieces in free agency, yet still has threats at all different positions, with Jordan Love looking to show the world what he’s made of, and Micah Parsons looking to bounce back from his torn ACL. Denver, on the other hand, seeks revenge against New England after the Patriots won in the AFC Championship last season. The Broncos were without quarterback Bo Nix, who suffered a season-ending right ankle fracture in the AFC Divisional Round against the Bills. Nix and the Broncos will do just about anything to get their payback. This now puts the Patriots at 8-3.

Other Away Games

Looking past New England’s three games on the road against Buffalo, New York, and Miami, they’ll also travel to face the Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angeles Chargers, Seattle Seahawks, and Jacksonville Jaguars. These road games for the Patriots will be no joke. Just by looking at the list of teams, New England will fall to Detroit, Chicago, Kansas City, and Seattle. The Lions and Bears look to be the frontrunners of the NFC North, both with huge Super Bowl aspirations and their fan bases starving for another appearance in the biggest game of the year. Patrick Mahomes will look to surge after tearing his ACL, as well as the Chiefs as a whole, as they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Kansas City added Super Bowl LX MVP, running back Kenneth Walker III, who shredded defenses on the ground all last season with Seattle. Speaking of the Seahawks, while they did lose key pieces in the Super Bowl LX MVP, as well as cornerstones in their tenacious defense, they still have a great team and added guys that could fill the void. Plus, they still have Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, both looking to run back another Super Bowl Championship. Against these four teams, this makes New England 8-7.

The Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL Wild Card last season. Los Angeles hasn’t been able to show their capable of being the high-caliber team everyone thinks year in and year out with Justin Herbert at the helm. For Jacksonville, they lost a few key pieces, such as running back Travis Etienne and linebacker Devin Lloyd. While quarterback Trevor Lawrence showed what he could do with a great squad behind him, perhaps the free agency damage has been too much. For me, this puts the Patriots at 10-7.

Final Thoughts

At 10-7, the Patriots are most likely a sixth or seventh seed on the AFC side of the NFL Playoffs. You’d have to think Buffalo will be in the playoff mix, as well as Kansas City, Los Angeles, and Jacksonville, in addition to the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and Houston Texans. From here, that’s eight teams mentioned; one of these franchises wouldn’t see the 2026 NFL Playoffs. Possibly Cincinnati once again? Perhaps Los Angeles or Jacksonville falls short? Regardless, just one extra win could go a long way for the Patriots. The complete opposite result if they lose an extra game. One additional loss could push the Patriots from being in the Super Bowl a year ago to being out of the playoff picture. Anything could happen, yet you have to be confident in Drake Maye’s abilities and what he brings to the Patriots organization.
