Rare Win for the Spurs: Can Tottenham Stay Out of the Relegation Zone in 2026?

When it was least expected, Tottenham rose. It’s been a hellish season for the Spurs, in the midst of their first-ever relegation from the Premier League. All hope seemed lost, while West Ham rejoiced in its prospect of staying in the highest-level soccer league of the UK for one more season. However, one of the greatest aspects of sports is that nothing about it is fully predictable. Just when we all thought that Tottenham would have to fight its way back from the Championship League next season, they managed to get themselves out of the relegation zone. What everyone is wondering now is whether the Spurs’ victory is a sign that the team is re-emerging like a phoenix from the ashes, or just a fluke. Can Tottenham stay clear and save itself?

No one ever imagined that the Spurs had a chance against Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s team was having a solid season, fifth in the Premier League table, and they are currently set to directly qualify for the Champions League. This was going to be a tough game for the Spurs, who won against the Wolves last week only to remain in the same position on the Premier League table after West Ham’s victory over Everton. Now, Tottenham had been gaining a bit of traction since Roberto de Zerbi’s appointment. One loss, one tie, and two victories respectively show a progressive improvement. No doubt the Spurs’ revitalization has something to do with the new manager, who has now effectively revived the fans’ hopes of glory.

The game against the Villans was turned in the Spurs' favor early. A goal by Conor Gallagher in the first 15 minutes of the game earned the Aston Villa players boos from their home crowd at Villa Park. Just 13 minutes later, Richarlison would score a header goal for the Spurs. Not even Emi Buendía’s overtime goal could dampen Tottenham’s mood, as they walked away with confidence and high spirits; they had exited the relegation zone. If the Spurs continue their good work, this will be the biggest comeback of the season and a textbook demonstration of how effective coaching can completely transform a team.

Now the Spurs find themselves one point above relegation. Their next game is set to take place on May 11th against Leeds United, in 14th place on the Premier League table. If Tottenham manages to secure a victory against the Whites, then we might just see them crawl into next season’s Premier League. The relegation battles are not over yet, and with West Ham just one point away from Tottenham, they cannot afford to let their guard down. Fortunately for the Spurs and unfortunately for the Hammers, the latter's next game is against table-toppers Arsenal this May 10th. Maybe Tottenham has a chance.
