Rempe Redemption: What’s There to Learn for Next Season?
With training camp beginning next month, this New York Rangers roster is ready to impress their new coach for a new season. This New York roster is nowhere near the same as last season, including plenty of youngsters competing for their spot in MSG. While plenty of young prospects deserve their spot on the roster, one enforcer has plenty more to learn when it comes to the NHL. Since his debut in 2024, Matt Rempe has collected quite a lot of attention from NHL fans and much love from Rangers fans. Even enforcers like Ryan Reaves, who spoke highly of him in 2024, see the menace that this kid can become. Rempe has proven he can step up for his teammates, as well as having no fear when it comes to squaring off against those NHL bad boys, making him quite loved in MSG. Though he may be loved, it hasn’t stopped him from getting sent down from time to time, as he still has much to learn. As he looks to join training camp next month, he’s got an all-new coach he’ll need to impress to be considered for a spot. Though he’s had his moments, the six-foot-nine Ranger still has plenty to learn to get back in MSG.
Based on how things may change under Mike Sullivan, fans may be looking at quite a different Rempe compared to the last two seasons. While Rempe has been known for his hitting, his size has made it quite hard to avoid disaster. Throughout his previous two seasons, Rempe has already had two suspensions, his previous being an eight-game suspension for his elbow on Miro Heiskanen in Dallas. Not only has he been suspended twice in two seasons, but he’s already been ejected four times in a total of 22 games. Since his suspension, though, the 23-year-old has looked smarter on the ice; it's no doubt his teammates have been helping him to be smart with his physicality. The six-foot-nine Blueshirt looks to be making an effort to control himself. Fans will be happy to know he’s learning. With a full Summer to learn more, next season could show a much smarter Matt Rempe, one who can still be a menace on the ice and can still produce. He did his time during his suspension, and it seemed to motivate him into being better, which looks to have paid off at the end of last season.
Once the suspension ended, Rempe earned himself eight points with three goals and five assists through 37 games. Throughout last season, he built quite the chemistry with his linemates Sam Carrick and Adam Edström, which sadly ended due to Edström missing the rest of the season due to a lower-body injury in February. The fourth line surprised quite a few, showing Rempe still has the speed and skill to be on the ice. His improvement to end the season also earned him a two-year contract, giving him the Summers to work on his game, as well as working as a counselor at Junior Rangers camp. Ending the season on a pretty high note could be a sneak peek of what's to come of the 23-year-old as he plays even smarter going forward. Though his spot on opening night may be unlikely, Rempe’s efforts to play smarter will certainly earn him a spot at some point next season. Fans can hope he can impress Mike Sullivan enough to stay with the Blueshirts for a while. Matt Rempe arrives at training camp next month. Let's see if the big guy can play as smart as he wants and find himself back in MSG for more.
