Rockies Fall Short in Battle with the Rangers

MLB

The Colorado Rockies’ struggles continued on May 13th, 2025, Tuesday night at Globe Life Field, where they fell 4–1 to the Texas Rangers in the opener of their three-game series. Despite scoring first, Colorado’s offense sputtered after the opening frame, while the Rangers capitalized early and held steady behind solid pitching. The Rockies jumped out to a quick 1–0 lead in the top of the first inning. Brenton Doyle reached on an infield single, advanced on a groundout, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan McMahon. It was a promising start for a team desperate for momentum, but it would also be the only run Colorado would push across all night.

The lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the first, Texas answered with authority. After consecutive singles by Sam Haggerty and Wyatt Langford, Rangers third baseman Josh Jung drilled a three-run home run to right-center field off Rockies starter Kyle Freeland. The blast was Jung’s fifth of the season and shifted the momentum firmly in Texas' favor. Freeland recovered well after the rough first inning and turned in a respectable outing. He pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five. Despite the solid effort, he was tagged with the loss, falling to 0–5 on the year.

Rangers rookie Jack Leiter, making one of the best starts of his young career, stifled the Rockies’ bats. He allowed two hits and one run over six innings, walking none and striking out five. The Rangers bullpen kept Colorado scoreless over the final three innings. Texas tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning with a two-out RBI single, extending their lead to 4–1. That proved more than enough as Colorado failed to mount a late-inning comeback.

The loss drops the Rockies to a league-worst 7–35, continuing a frustrating 2025 campaign marked by offensive inconsistency and missed opportunities. The Rangers, on the other hand, improved to 22–21 and have now won four straight games. The two teams will meet again Wednesday night. The Rockies hoping to snap their losing streak and rediscover some offensive rhythm.
