Struggling Rockies Face Second-Place Padres

MLB

The San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies will face off tomorrow, Saturday, May 10th, 2025, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:10 p.m. PDT. As divisional rivals in the NL West, both teams will be looking to gain ground in the standings, even though they're heading into this matchup with very different narratives. The Padres are riding a wave of early-season momentum, while the Rockies are trying to claw their way out of one of the worst starts in franchise and league history. Losing their last six games to the Giants and Tigers has only dug this Rockies team into a deeper hole.

San Diego has made some impressive moves to solidify their roster this season. With the additions of Michael King and Dylan Cease to the starting rotation, the Padres have added much-needed depth and strikeout power. Their bullpen remains a bright spot, particularly with Robert Suarez excelling as a closer and leading the National League in saves. Offensively, the Padres have a balanced lineup, with stars like Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado providing the punch, while younger contributors continue to emerge. If they can maintain their consistency on the mound and at the plate, they are poised to remain a serious postseason contender.

On the other side, the Rockies are desperately searching for answers. Their 2025 campaign has been historically poor. The team is projected to win just 10 games by Memorial Day weekend which is putting them in the company of infamously bad teams like the 1904 Washington Senators and 1932 Boston Red Sox. Injuries and inconsistency have taken over their lineup, and their pitching staff has struggled to find rhythm, despite a milestone achievement by veteran Germán Márquez, who recently notched his 1,000th career strikeout.

Tomorrow's game offers Colorado a much-needed opportunity to turn things around, especially at home in hitter-friendly Coors Field. If they can jump on Padres pitching early and lean on their thin but talented core, they might be able to snap their slide and spark some midseason hope. For the Padres, the game is a chance to stay sharp, pad their record, and continue to take advantage of struggling opponents. With ideal hitting conditions and two teams hungry for different reasons, fans can expect an intense and potentially high-scoring affair in Denver.
