Saints Legend Thinks the Team Has an Opportunity to Win the South

NFL

Drew Brees, one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history and a New Orleans legend, has been making the media rounds this week. While appearing on several popular podcasts and shows, Brees mostly shared his perspective on the entire league, but fans couldn’t help but wonder about his thoughts on the Saints. Even without specifically discussing his former team, Brees hinted at the opportunity the Saints have in a division that appears to be wide open. With the NFC South lacking a true powerhouse, the timing might be right for New Orleans to make a push.

Brees pointed out that while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have run the South in recent years, their reign doesn’t look unshakable. The division is filled with uncertainty, especially at the quarterback position, which gives every team a chance to compete. He noted that the Saints are a wildcard because of their own quarterback situation, with Spencer Rattler recently named as the starter and rookie Tyler Shough sitting behind him. It’s a gamble, but one that could pay off if the young players proliferate under the new coaching staff.

The offensive line and surrounding playmakers are key to the Saints’ success, something Brees highlighted with optimism. If the unit stays healthy, whoever is under center will have the support needed to manage games and move the ball effectively. New Orleans has long built its identity on strong offensive execution, and that foundation could once again steady the ship. Health will be the most significant factor, but talent is there to create a winning formula. The Falcons and Panthers also have much to prove, as both teams are trying to rebuild with young talent and untested leadership. Atlanta’s quarterback position has been under the microscope, while Carolina continues to search for consistency on offense and stability on defense. Neither team has established itself as a clear threat, leaving the division without a genuine frontrunner. That reality reinforces Brees’ belief that the Saints, despite their questions, can still find a path to success.

In the end, it’s hard to disagree with Brees’ assessment of the Saints’ chances. While their overall ceiling may not be as high as in years past, the wide-open NFC South creates an opportunity that New Orleans can seize. Much will hinge on the play of Rattler, Shough’s readiness if called upon, and the coaching staff's ability to maximize the roster’s potential. With veteran playmakers and a strong supporting cast, Brees’ former team could surprise the league. For now, Saints fans can share in their legend’s optimism that the South is within reach.
