Should the Giants Still Trust Their Veteran Kicker?

NFL

After missing much of the last two seasons, New York Giants kicker Graham Gano finally looks healthy and ready to contribute in 2025. At 38 years old, Gano is one of the oldest kickers in the NFL, and his age, combined with recent injuries, has left many fans and analysts questioning whether his best days are behind him. However, his strong performance in the preseason has begun to quiet some of those doubts and restore confidence in his role with the team. Gano has only appeared in 18 games over the past two years, a number that highlights just how much time injuries have cost him. When on the field, though, he has been one of the most reliable specialists the Giants have had in years. Since signing with New York in 2020, Gano has consistently provided stability at a position where consistency is everything.

Looking at his career numbers, Gano has an 83.7% field goal success rate, a mark that places him among the more dependable kickers of his generation. His first three seasons with the Giants were particularly impressive. From 2020 through 2022, he connected on 89 of 97 attempts, an outstanding 91.8%. That level of production gave New York a major advantage in close games, where his ability to convert from long range often proved to be the difference. The 2023 season, however, was a turning point. Gano went just 11-for-17 on field goals, by far his worst percentage with the Giants. The struggles coincided with the injuries that ultimately ended his year early, raising concerns in the front office about whether he could return to form.

In 2024, Gano again battled injuries but showed encouraging progress, making nine of 11 attempts. Though the sample size was small, the accuracy hinted that he still has plenty left in the tank if he can stay healthy. The biggest question now is not accuracy but leg strength. While some fans worry that age and injuries have diminished his power, the numbers suggest otherwise. With New York, Gano has converted 25 of 31 field goal attempts from 50 yards or longer, proving he remains a legitimate long-distance threat. The true challenge lies in durability—can his body hold up over a full season? If Gano stays on the field, the Giants will once again have one of the most trustworthy kickers in football. Given New York’s grueling schedule in 2025, every point will matter, and Gano’s veteran steadiness could provide the edge the Giants need in tight, hard-fought games.
