Seahawks/Cowboys Trade Proposal: Benefit or Financial Loss?
With the 2025 preseason just ending this past weekend, we are now in the in-between period from the preseason til the regular season, which starts next week. With dozens and dozens of shakeups, trades, and newish leadership roles on top of that to consider as well in the headspace of the NFL. Things tend to get pretty hairy right before kickoff happens in the fall. The final roster postings for each and every NFL team will happen tomorrow, August 26th. It is really getting down to the wire here, especially between the Seattle Seahawks and the Dallas Cowboys.
A possible last-minute trading opportunity has been making the rounds amidst the final hours before finalized rosters. With just one player from Dallas possibly being passed over to Seattle. That player is none other than Mazi Smith, he had been with Dallas since the 2023 draft, riding with a 13.2 million, four-year contract to his name with the team. That is a huge sum of money, whether or not he gets traded to Seattle. It all truly depends on whether or not Dallas would want to just keep him and not up that financial sum. Assuming that Dallas even has money for a trade lying around somewhere in their offices, this could go both ways for Seattle and Dallas. Though the option is still out there for Dallas to keep Smith for themselves and have Seattle find someone else instead.
Judging by how much time they only have, those precious hours could have anything and absolutely everything happens at the drop of a hat. In terms of what is left for options that both Dallas and Seattle can put on the table. There is a benefit to this, for Seattle’s sake. One of their own players, Johnathan Hankins, is currently still out with a back injury. Therefore, he would need a replacement player in his position sooner rather than later, so therefore one of the 53 Seahawks isn’t just warming the bench while the injury heals. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell had some comments on the situation.
“There’s no timeline for veteran Seahawks tackle Johnathan Hankins to return from a back injury, creating a need for help on the interior. Seahawks coach MacDonald worked with Smith when the two were at Michigan in 2021. The Cowboys might have to kick in some money to get a deal done, but they feel like they can bury the news about giving up on a first-round pick once they inevitably announce they’ve come to an agreement with star edge rusher Micah Parsons.” Overall, this deal isn’t too high-risk of a move, even with the huge amount of money attached to Smith. Though his energy and teamwork can help fill in the missing piece that is left with Hankin’s injury. The first game for the regular season is happening on September 7th. There is still time to prepare, even if very little and shrinking faster than we know it.
