Should the 2026 NY Rangers Reunite with the 38-Year-Old Minnesota Free Agent?

NHL

Following the 2026 NHL Draft and a major trade, the New York Rangers find themselves with plenty more to do this offseason. As free agency kicks off Wednesday, fans may be in store for a few more upgrades to this roster. Whether he’s the right person or not, fans will have to trust that Chris Drury can keep the momentum going after joining the trade chaos with the Pavel Dorofeyev trade. Holding over $15 million in cap space heading into free agency, the bottom six remains an area Mike Sullivan addressed that should be worked on. With the rookies from last season looking to take up most of the bottom six, a nice veteran mentor would be a nice presence to have, and fans may know just the free agent to pick up.

With plenty of cap space to pursue more upgrades, some additional wingers on the fourth or third line wouldn’t hurt. A potential option has recently presented itself, as a former fan favorite Ranger is unlikely to resign in Minnesota. Making his debut in 2010, Mats Zuccarello played nine seasons with the Blueshirts, which included numerous deep playoff runs, including a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014. As the Blueshirts entered rebuilding mode in 2019, the fan-favorite winger was traded on February 23rd 2019, to the Dallas Stars. Heading into the 2019 offseason as a free agent, the Norway native was picked up by Minnesota, continuing to be quite a productive winger. Now, on the verge of hitting free agency this Summer, would a short-term deal be likely?

While it’s clear a move like this would bring back some nostalgia for New York fans, that can’t be the reason to bring Zuccarello back. Moves like this need to make sense, and if there’s a spot for him posing as a good mentor for the younglings, fans should be all for it. Signing the veteran would not only give the young players a mentor, but it would also help if you’re looking ahead to the trade deadline and hoping to flip him to a contender for a solid pick. If all goes well for the 38-year-old this season, who may produce even more playing with a player like Dorofeyev, it guarantees a potential return. As long as it’s short-term and does not include an NMC, there’s really not much of a risk to it, so why not?

You look at a player like Zuccarello’s age, and you may think it may not be the best idea, especially for a team wanting to focus on the youngsters. Make no mistake, the former Rangers production may have dropped since his days with New York, but it hasn’t gone anywhere. The 16-year veteran finished off his latest season with 15 goals and 39 assists for a total of 54 points. Hitting the 50-point mark for the last five seasons with Minnesota, Zuccarello still has the production in him, so whether it’s a top-six role or bottom, some more production would do wonders for potential assets in the future. Not much risk involved whatsoever, so does Drury look on to more youth, or does he bring a former New York star back where it all started?
