Will the NY Rangers Join the 2026 Offseason Trade Chaos?
This last week has been one that many NHL fans have had to process, as trades many may not have expected came out of nowhere. When you see a trade like Brady Tkachuk finding a new home in Florida, and Chicago giving up that fourth overall pick, you know it’s gonna be an offseason to remember for most fans. As teams try to be aggressive in the offseason, one team has stayed on the sidelines. A storm of trades for most, but amidst the chaos, New York Rangers fans continue to lose patience as they have yet to see their team join in on the chaos.
Chris Drury continues with his newly announced retool and has yet to make a blockbuster move this offseason to return this Rangers team to contender status as quickly as possible. While most teams appear to be part of a storm like this, seeing your own team have no part of it surely makes many understand the frustration. After two seasons of disappointment, fans were treated to a bright spot at the end of their latest season, watching the youngsters on the ice. A spark of hope from them, no doubt, but in order to take the next step, moves need to be made, and right now, it seems none of those potential moves have anything to do with the coming draft.
We’re just a little more than 24 hours until the 2026 NHL Draft, one that’s just as unpredictable as any outside of the first overall pick. It’s been made clear that New York was looking to move farther up in the draft, not being very satisfied with their nightmare of a lottery, but it looks as if that ship has sailed. However, until that clock hits 7:00 p.m. EST tomorrow, there’s still time to make a move. Reports indicate that the Buffalo Sabers, currently holding the fourth overall pick in their trade with Chicago, have been engaged in trade talks with the Blueshirts involving Vincent Trocheck. Is the 32-year-old center worth a fourth overall, maybe, maybe not? Fans will just have to see what Drury’s got in store if this trade unfolds.
Aside from Trocheck, it’s hard to imagine anything bigger than that through the rest of this offseason. The offseason is far from over, of course, but aside from not having many assets to work with, New York doesn’t seem to be the most favored place right now. Most key players heading into the offseason don’t seem to have any interest in making their way to MSG next season; not a single one mentioned the Rangers on their preferred team lists. It would seem that much of this offseason could hinge on their draft decisions. With how patient they are with Trocheck, fans may have to wait a little longer, maybe even all the way to next season's trade deadline if that’s what it takes to work out the perfect deal. Going into a season where a single misstep is critical, the Rangers simply need to find a way. Fans await your aggression, Chris Drury.
