Should the 2026 Padres Flip Their 31-Year-Old Ace at the Trade Deadline?

MLB

It feels like the jury is out on the 2026 San Diego Padres at this point in the season. The trade deadline is rapidly approaching, and the team is in the worst spot they have been all year. They sit on the outside of the playoff picture with a record of 48-49. Spearheaded by the worst offense in baseball, hitting the reset button has appeared on the radar of many Padres fans. The struggles appear to be more of a standard as opposed to a slump, with the Friars team OPS sitting at .673, good for dead last in the entire MLB.  Some of the names thrown around in trade talks have been the Padres' best players through the first half of the season. Although it still remains a mystery what general manager A.J. Preller will elect to do at the deadline, it's clear some players would result in valuable hauls if sold.

Consistent Performance

By far one of the best-performing Padres through the rollercoaster first half is their ace, Michael King. Since coming to San Diego by way of the Juan Soto New York Yankees trade, the 31-year-old has done nothing but perform. In his first year as a starter, he earned Cy Young votes, posting an ERA of 2.95 in 173.2 innings of work. After an injury-shortened yet successful 2025 in which King posted a 122 ERA+ in 73.1 innings, the Padres liked what they saw. As a result, the former Yankee was extended. The 31-year-old was handed a three-year, $75 million deal before the 2026 season. In the first year of his contract, King performed well with an ERA of 3.34 in 113.1 first-half innings. The right-handers' value goes beyond numbers as well. His position as the Padres' frontline starter is especially important considering the lack of consistency surrounding him in the rotation. King may be wildly important to San Diego, but sometimes preparing for the future must be made a priority.

Closing Window

King’s contract notably has two player options, one following the 2026 season and another following the 2027 season. To this point, the former reliever has made himself quite a desirable target if he were to test the open market with his opt-out. The 31-year-old currently stands at 20th in all of MLB in ERA, ahead of well-paid arms such as Jacob deGrom. Although he has already proven his love for San Diego with the initial three-year deal, the likely lockout approaching in 2027, coupled with the currently lucrative contract market, gives King many reasons to opt out, which consequently gives the struggling Padres front office many reasons to flip him at the deadline. Premier starters are extremely hard to come by in 2026; the Padres front office knows this better than most. The best course of action to ensure San Diego's success in 2027 and beyond is a retooling of the decimated farm system. This 2026 squad will not be able to compete with the top dogs in the National League. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, and Milwaukee Brewers would eat them alive in a playoff series. Swapping the 31-year-old is a painful yet needed move if the Padres want to continue to perform in 2027 and beyond.
