Who Have Been the 2026 Padres Best Players Through the First Half of the Season?
We are rapidly approaching Major League Baseball’s signature Midsummer Classic. With the All-Star Game and the trade deadline on the horizon, the Padres have stumbled mightily. The squad has successfully played itself out of the National League Wild Card and has essentially ensured itself zero shot at a division crown. They currently sit at 46-47, good for third in the National League West, 14.5 games back from the mighty Dodgers. The record has been dropped into the dirt courtesy of a recent nine-game losing streak, one that places the Padres at 3-7 in their last 10 contests. To add insult to injury, the collapse happened in the midst of a four-game series against the division rival Dodgers, displaying the team's struggles against top competition. Despite all the chaos and underperformance surrounding the 2026 Padres, standouts have emerged. The team’s bullpen is still an elite unit, and some bats have performed.
Local Surprise:
Ty France has served as the 2026 Padres' heartwarming breakout story. The 31-year-old was initially drafted to the Padres back in 2015 in the 34th round. Seen as a long shot to ever become something in the MLB, the former Aztec shocked many, breaking into the MLB in 2019 and performing decently in minimal time with the Padres. At the 2020 trade deadline, he was shipped to the Seattle Mariners; it was there that he truly found his footing. France earned an all-star nod in 2022. He accrued 8.0 WAR in his two and a half years in Seattle before bouncing around other organizations. To start 2026, France returned to his original squad, signing a one-year deal with the Padres. Thus far, he's racked up 1.5 WAR thanks to an 86th percentile fielding run value and a quality offensive season. In 67 games, France has registered an OPS+ of 114, good for best on the Padres. He's provided pop as well, with 20 extra-base hits on the year, 10 of which are home runs. The first baseman's output has been one of the few bright spots on an otherwise brutal Padres lineup.
Remaining Ace:
There have no doubt been bumps through Michael King’s 2026 season, but the fact remains: he is this team's ace. Since joining the Padres back in 2024 courtesy of the Juan Soto trade, King has been one of the best starters in baseball. In his first full year as a starter in 2024, the former Yankee dominated, throwing 173.2 innings of 2.95 ERA baseball. He proved himself to be a master of the strikeout as well, punching out 201 batters. Despite an injury-riddled season in 2025, the Padres liked King’s 3.44 ERA in 15 starts enough to ink him to a contract extension entering 2026. The deal has been worth it thus far. The former Yankee has been the Padres' only consistent starter in 2026. Despite occasional blow-up starts, the right-hander has posted an ERA of 3.41 in 108.1 innings through the first half of the year. Those numbers have allowed him to rack up 2.4 WAR. He has registered a pitching run value in the 92nd percentile this year. This is thanks in large part to his whiffleball-like offspeed pitches, ones that rank in the 98th percentile of offspeed run value. King may not be earning any all-star nods, but he has been a breath of fresh air in an otherwise struggling Padres rotation.
Flame Thrower:
By far and away, the Padres' best player through 2026 has been their electric closer, Mason Miller. Despite a recent lack of use thanks to the struggles, Miller is still in the top three in saves in the entire MLB. At the halfway point, the former Athletic has already earned 23 saves. That number is made even more impressive when you consider that he is yet to blow a save in 23 tries. Beyond the perfect 23-for-23 mark, Miller has posted an ERA of just 0.96 in 37.2 innings. It has been strikeouts galore as well, with 69 punchouts already. To make his numbers even more ridiculous, his FIP is even lower than his real ERA, standing at 0.57. All of these absurd numbers have given Miller 2.1 WAR as a relief pitcher. His Baseball Savant page reveals nothing but red. The 27-year-old is in the 95th percentile in pitching run value with a breaking run value in the 97th percentile. Miller also ranks in the 100th percentile in six separate Baseball Savant categories. The terrifying right-hander is easily the Padres' best player and likely will continue to be if they retain him through the second half of 2026.
