Should the Saints Pursue the Former Browns Four-Time Pro Bowler?
After acquiring some new quarterbacks while they continue to rebuild their team, the New Orleans Saints now have to focus on the players catching the passes and putting points on the scoreboard. Their current roster of running backs consists of Alvin Kamara, who has been with the team since 2017, Kendre Miller, who has been with the team for two seasons, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who has completed his rookie year. Newcomers to the team include Xazavian Valladay, who played for the New York Jets, Marcus Yarns, who was signed at the end of April, and Devin Neal, who was signed at the beginning of this month. Mr. Kamara’s recent 2024 stats had him starting and playing 14 games, had 228 rushing attempts, a gain of 950 rushing yards, and scoring six touchdowns. Miller's 2024 numbers had him play six games with starting in two of them, 39 rushing attempts, a gain of 148 rushing yards, and scoring a touchdown. The former rookie Mr. Edwards-Helaire had limited experience in the two games he played in 2024, in which he had 13 rushing attempts, gaining 46 rushing yards, and not scoring any touchdowns. From these numbers, Kamara is heavily relied on as the starting RB, which could be dangerous if he were injured and then benched for several weeks.
Could the other RBs match his experience on the field while he recuperates? This solution to this possibility may require bringing in another running back to fill in if necessary. Four-time Pro Bowler Nick Chubb, who is currently available in the league, may be the player the Saints need. Nick spent seven seasons with the Cleveland Browns, during which he started in 78 of the 85 games he played. His 2024 season had 102 rushing attempts, a gain of 332 rushing yards, and three touchdowns. His career in Cleveland resulted overall with 1,340 rushing attempts, 6,843 rushing yards, and 51 touchdowns. From these stats, it is obvious Mr. Chubb can put up some numbers, and the Browns were fortunate to have him on their offensive line. It’s also obvious that he shouldn’t be overlooked, especially by the New Orleans coaching staff.
The newly drafted and signed Saints’ quarterbacks will be under a lot of pressure when they step onto their field in September. Their potential will be discussed on podcasts, cable TV analysts will debate their experience, and participants in fantasy drafts will argue who would be a better pick. The man holding the football after it has been hiked to him will need to make a quick decision before being tackled. He knows that whoever he chooses to throw the ball to will be available to immediately catch and run down the field. He needs to be confident that whoever he throws it to is experienced and will know exactly where to meet the ball. The Saints cannot forget that their QBs are going to need to rely on players who know what to expect in those stressful seconds between plays. An experienced NFL player, such as Nick Chubb, would help them with this.
