Six-Time All-Star Point Guard Inks Deal to Return to the 76ers
39-year-old point guard Kyle Lowry has certainly enjoyed his 19-year career, playing with five different teams during that time. During his illustrious career, he was a key contributor in helping the Toronto Raptors win the 2019 NBA Finals, a six-time all-star, and has the second-most points scored in Raptors history. Lowry has been a member of the Philadelphia 76ers for the past season and a half. The Sixers did not have the season they thought they would, finishing 13th in the East with a 24-58 record. Philly stars such as Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey suffered injuries that ravaged this team’s season from very early on. Back again as a pending free agent, Lowry has been determining the next steps in his career. It’s been announced by Shams Charania that the 2019 NBA champion point guard signed a one-year deal with the 76ers.
The six-time all-star point guard started off his career with the Memphis Grizzlies as he was selected as the 24th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. With Memphis, the future 2019 NBA champion point guard was primarily a role player, only starting in 30 games. Three seasons with the Grizzlies go by, and the team would send Lowry to the Houston Rockets. It wasn’t until he was in Houston that Lowry found his capabilities as a starting-caliber point guard. Another three and a half seasons went by with the Rockets, and once again, he was traded, this time to the Toronto Raptors. Over the years, with his teammate DeMar DeRozan, the Raptors would become a playoff team. From 2014-2018, Toronto was eliminated in the first round twice, the semifinals, and the Eastern Conference Finals back in 2016. Toronto eventually traded for Kawhi Leonard, and with a new sidekick, Lowry became an NBA champion after the Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors in six games. He stayed with the Raptors until the end of the 2020-2021 season, where in that offseason, Lowry agreed to a sign-and-trade to the Miami Heat. During his time as a member of the Heat, the 38-year-old point guard helped Miami to two Eastern Conference Finals appearances and an NBA Finals appearance. This past season, Lowry’s contract was bought out by the Heat on February 11th,and he then signed with the 76ers. Then, during the 2024 off-season, the six-time all-star point guard re-signed with Philadelphia.
This past season, Lowry played in just 35 games with the Sixers. He had 12 starts and averaged about 19 minutes a game. During his time of play, he recorded about four points, two rebounds, three assists, and a steal. On October 25th, the second game of the season against Lowry’s former team in the Raptors, the six-time all-star put up a season-high of 14 points, while recording a rebound, two assists, and three steals. Even though it seems like the end of his career could be close, Lowry has shown he has the knowledge, the veteran experience, and the capabilities of still being a player in the league today. With the 76ers, it should be interesting to see what the 39-year-old can do.
