Team Türkiye Defeats Undermanned Team USA 3-2 in 2026 FIFA World Cup

Thursday night will mark the end of Team Türkiye’s stint in the 2026 World Cup, but they will head back home with their heads held high. The game was virtually meaningless for Team USA, resting nearly all of its starters due to previously received yellow cards or rest ahead of the Round of 32, but they still managed to give the Turkish, a group with nothing to lose, a huge run for their money. After the Americans opened the scoring within the first ten minutes of the game, as they did in all three group stage games this year, Arda Güler and Barış Alper Yılmaz gave the road team the lead heading into halftime. With the game winding down to the final minute, Kaan Ayhan was not content to see this one end in a draw, and he put in the go-ahead goal to give ‘Ay-Yıldızlılar’ the win. However, as one team’s World Cup dreams come to an end, another’s have just begun. Team USA, along with Team Australia, which the Americans dominated 2-0 in the group stage, will move on to the knockout stage. With Mauricio Pochettino’s squad set to take on Bosnia and Herzegovina next Wednesday, here are a few details to look out for.

‘Captain America’ Looked Ready in His Return

It wasn’t just that Christian Pulisic looked healthy and fully recovered from his injury on Thursday night’s match with Türkiye, because he certainly did. When the Pennsylvania native checked in to the game at the 58th minute mark, the crowd instantly lit up. His presence and pressure immediately led to a goal from Sebastian Berhalter, who tied the game at 2-2. If anybody was concerned about the 27-year-old AC Milan forward’s health heading into this game, they weren’t after full-time. After a disappointing loss like this one against Türkiye, the Americans will be in dire need of Pulisic’s energy in the Round of 32, and if you’re Folarin Balogun or Pochettino, you’re more than happy with what you saw tonight.

Chemistry, Vibes, and Expectations Are at an All-Time High for Team USA

The final group stage game for the Americans will largely be written off as nothing more than a full-energy friendly that ended in a negative way. With no Balogun, no Pulisic for the first half, and with a change at goalkeeper, this was not a must-win game for Team USA, and the result was as such. However, what’s different about this compared to past renditions of ‘The Yanks’ is the energy. World Cup fever is at an all-time high in the States, and it’s not just because American cities are hosting the games. That being said, with the better performances comes even more pressure, and when you are playing so well that you can write off an entire game, the mental side of football becomes a factor. It’s okay to celebrate that this year’s club has the chance to go farther than Team USA has ever gone, but they cannot lose sight of the game, like they may have tonight.
