Tennessee Completes the Sweep Over Mississippi State College Baseball

The Tennessee Volunteers completed a thrilling sweep over Mississippi State today in Starkville, finishing Game Three with a 7-2 victory to improve to 24-12 overall and 7-8 in Southeastern Conference play. The sweep came at a critical moment for Tennessee, and promising momentum heading into a nine-game homestand at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. As coach Josh Elander said after the game, the Vols still have a long way to go, but this was a successful weekend for the team. With matchups against Ole Miss and rival Alabama approaching, here are key points we can expect from this power program.

Blanco Leads a Dominant Pitching Performance

The most important development we can see from this series was the dominant pitching staff Tennessee displayed from start to finish. Senior lefty Evan Blanco headlined the series finale, allowing two earned runs across six and two-thirds innings while striking out six batters on 94 pitches, with 68 of them strikes. This kind of performance is exactly what Tennessee needs from its pitching staff during a demanding stretch in Southeastern Conference play. His performance was even more compelling when he faced his former head coach, Brian O’Connor, for the first time since transferring from Virginia last offseason. Moving forward, Blanco will be an essential arm to Tennessee if they want to make a deep run in the Southeastern Conference and the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.

Ford and Clark Deliver Offensive Power

The Vols' offense came alive when it truly mattered most. Tennessee batted .583 with runners on base and .571 with runners in scoring position, a production that separates postseason contenders from the rest of the field. Third baseman Henry Ford and catcher Levi Clark each drove in two runs to lead the charge, while seven of the nine starters recorded at least one hit. With Ole Miss and Alabama both set to visit Knoxville over the next two weekends, the offensive power will need to remain consistent. If Tennessee continues to produce at this rate with runners in scoring positions, the Vols have the offensive depth to compete with anyone on their schedule.

Rhudy Proves He Can Navigate Under Pressure

Bo Rhudy proved in today's series finale that he is more than capable of delivering in high-pressure situations. He entered the game in the bottom of the eighth with runners on the corners, the tying run on base, and worked out of the jam without surrendering a run. Rhudy returned to the mound in the ninth and threw a scoreless frame, allowing no hits, no walks, and striking out one batter, to earn his second save of this season. In the past, we’ve seen exciting matchups against the Georgia Bulldogs and the Vanderbilt Commodores, where Tennessee performed on the brink of winning but lost by one run. If Rhudy and his teammates can continue to gain consistency in high-pressure matchups, the Volunteers can turn their narrow losses into wins as the season progresses.
