The Czech Light Heavyweight Is Back: What Is Next for the 32-Year-Old Fighter?

UFC

Jiří Procházka took on Khalil Rountree Jr. at UFC 320 in a very high-stakes Light Heavyweight battle on Saturday, October 4th. Many believed this would be a true test for Jiří as he was nearing this potential career-pivoting fight. Rountree is known for his incredible power, which would be a serious challenge for Jiří. Rountree was looking almost unstoppable coming into this fight, regardless of the odds being in Jiří’s favor. Jiří proved that he is still a fierce competitor and found himself victorious once again.

Beating Rountree was a huge confidence boost for Jiří, one that was much needed. After losing to Alex Pereira in June of 2024, Jiří has been on an interesting journey to make his way back to the top. He took some time to work on his fitness and game plan following the loss, hopeful to put on a dominating performance in his return. He took on Jamahal Hill at UFC 311 in January of this year, where he mounted a third-round TKO finish. This was a statement win for Jiří,  and a fiery first fight back following a loss. Taking on Rountree would be a challenge, but one that Jiří was very willing to face. Neither fighter is known for going to the ground, each having only a few takedown attempts in their entire career. Therefore, this fight was all on the feet with powerful striking.

Jiří started very slowly, having Rountree dominate the majority of the fight. However, in the third round, Jiří finally started to string together some damaging combos. This overwhelmed Rountree and scored another knockout victory for Jiří. These last two fight performances have proven why Jiří still has a lot left in the tank. The future for him is looking bright, with a likelihood of another title contention.

The Light Heavyweight Division is in interesting times. What is next for Magomed Ankalaev and Alex Pereira’s desire to bump up to Heavyweight? Regardless, Jiří remains hungry and deserving of another chance at the title. Jiří should take this time to continue his training and sharpen his game plan. The shot at the title will come eventually, with Jiří making a serious case as to why he deserves it.
