The King of College Baseball: How the SEC Took the Last Six MCWS Titles

The SEC has asserted their dominance yet again. A record 13 SEC teams made it into the NCAA Postseason, after a weekend of regional competition, only four made it out. One of those four took the opportunity they were presented with and ran with it. All the way to Omaha, the LSU Tigers sprinted, and they didn’t stop until they had claimed their eighth program MCWS title.

Dominant in most standout sports in college athletics, this academic year, the SEC has taken the National Championship title in men’s basketball and now baseball as well. Omaha, Nebraska, is where many SEC baseball teams have thrived this past decade. Since 2019, no other conference has been able to claim the title of MCWS Champions. That’s six straight wins for the SEC.

In 2019, Vanderbilt was king. Nearly breaking 60 wins, Vandy lost a total of two games in the 2019 postseason. Falling to Duke in a Super Regional and then again to Michigan in the CWS final series. That loss led them to win two back-to-back games against the Wolverines. Vanderbilt’s 8-2 victory that earned them the title of National Champions was the start of a seven-year stint of SEC dominance.

The COVID-19 pandemic robbed all college athletes of a chance to compete in 2020, but in 2021, the SEC was back and ready to win it all yet again. Mississippi State and Vanderbilt represented the SEC in the final series of the 2021 College World Series, but Vandy couldn’t defend its title. Mississippi State shut out the Commodores and made light work of their pitching staff. A 9-0 score ended the final game. No matter how this CWS played out, the SEC remained on top.

In 2022, it was a battle of the Big 10 and SEC. Stuck in a bracket with Texas and Texas A&M, Oklahoma fought to dethrone the SEC from its reign on college baseball. However, Ole Miss was the better team in the end. In two games, Ole Miss sent the Sooners packing and took home their first CWS title. The SEC was still king, and it seemed there was no stopping them.

The Tigers of LSU had the season of their lives in 2023. It had been 13 seasons since their last CWS title back in 2009, and with a 54-17 record, they had everything laid out for them. Taking down their in-conference opponent, the Florida Gators, in Game Three, scoring a massive 18 runs, LSU claimed its seventh National Championship title. It was anyone’s game. The night before, the Gators took down the Tigers with a 20-run lead. A true SEC offensive battle.

It was heartbreak in Chapel Hill for the Tigers in 2024, and they fell to the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Round of 64. A different SEC team had its turn at glory. Led by Tony Vitello, the Tennessee Vols racked up a huge 60 wins during their season. Their 60th came against Texas A&M in a nail-biting 6-5 win to take the CWS title.

The 2025 season seemed to be the end of the reign of the SEC. That is, until two of the nation's most dominant teams powered their way to Omaha and became favorites to win. Arkansas and LSU, dropped into the same bracket, came face to face with the reality that only one of them would make it to the final series. Despite Arkansas’ elite pitching staff, LSU played both sides of the ball better.

Coastal Carolina had the chance to end the SEC streak with just two wins. In a tight pitching battle, LSU took Game One 1-0, but Coastal Carolina came to fight on day two. Unfortunately for the Chanticleers, their road ended with less-than-ideal circumstances. Both of their coaches were ejected before the first inning even ended, leaving them coachless through eight. It’s hard to keep up with the intensity of the SEC with a full coaching staff, let alone without one. The LSU Tigers took back their title with a 5-3 win, and the SEC was victorious for the sixth season in a row. Is there any stopping them now?
