Trade Freeze Looms as Rangers Weigh Their Next Big Deal
The Olympics are officially underway, and the New York Rangers have much to think about through these next few weeks. As fans worldwide are aware, the trade freeze is in effect and will not lift until February 22nd. Once the freeze lifts, many can expect intense discussions as the deadline is approaching, and there's much to discuss for these Rangers. Since Artemi Panarin's departure, New York fans have grown quite worried about what kind of trades they'll see in the future. As most fans were quite disappointed with Panarin's return, the big question is what they can expect in return for another of their key players. With plenty of time remaining to think on this, will the Rangers be able to get a big haul for Vincent Trocheck?
A key part of this trade is ensuring Trocheck remains healthy. Unfortunately, these may be a long few weeks, as Trocheck will play for Team USA, and any injury would be devastating. As teams plan to take advantage of the freeze being lifted, it would make sense for Trocheck to be one of the biggest topics. If teams are truly looking for a key centerman, Trocheck is no doubt the man to acquire. With a 12-team No Trade List, it is easier to make a deal compared to Panarin and his Full No Movement Clause. With his ability to perform, most notably in the postseason, it makes sense that a few teams already have their eyes on him, but who can offer the most in return?
It's not surprising teams will be interested, but there seems to be no team as interested as the Minnesota Wild. Since the Rangers have made it clear they're no longer competing, Minnesota has been linked as the most likely destination. Other teams on the list could include the Detroit Red Wings, who clearly have no problem collecting Rangers, and the Carolina Hurricanes; they'd surely be happy to have him back. So, with many interested, what would be the best deal? Potential packages from Minnesota may include Danila Yurov, with a first-round pick included. With two first-round picks already this coming offseason, an additional one would be huge, considering many expected one for Panarin. Before the Rangers beat them to it, Detroit was quite interested in Trocheck and even pursued him aggressively. Perhaps they're still interested; their prospect, Marco Kasper, would be very much welcome in New York. Plenty of time remains to think it all through, and with plenty of opportunities available, fans may be in for something big. Can Chris Drury make it happen?
