Two-Time Pro Bowl RB Passes Away
On October 19th, 2025, TMZ, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and many other sources reported that former Buccaneers’ and Raiders’ RB Doug Martin has reportedly passed away at the age of 36. Currently, the cause of death remains unknown. Martin played seven years in the NFL, was voted to two Pro Bowls, and was a First-Team All-Pro in 2015 for the Bucs. The ‘Dougernaut’ broke multiple franchise records in his career, tying one NFL record for the most rushing touchdowns in a half with four. In a statement by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the franchise said, “he was a fan favorite during his time in Tampa Bay and was honored as one of the Top 50 Buccaneers of all time for his numerous achievements.”
Born and raised in California, Martin rushed for almost 2,000 yards in his junior year of high school and 14 touchdowns in his senior year, earning him the MVP award for his team. Martin received interest from larger programs like Oregon, but decided to commit to Boise State in 2007. His college career started slowly, but he finished his five-year career with the Broncos, recording 3,431 yards on 617 carries with 43 touchdowns, earning the nickname ‘Muscle Hamster’ for his short but muscular stature. 74% of his collegiate rushing yards came in his final two seasons, and all of his touchdowns came in his final three years. Martin was invited to the combine and ranked in the top 10 in most categories. The Buccaneers took a chance on him, drafting Martin with the 31st pick in the first round of the 2012 draft.
Martin was one of three running backs to be a first-round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, being drafted much later than third overall pick Trent Richardson and one pick before Giants’ selection David Wilson. In Martin’s rookie season, he recorded what would remain his career highs with 1,454 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, with 476 receiving yards and a score through the air. Martin would only play one additional full season in the NFL, rushing for another 1,400 yards, averaging almost five yards per carry, earning him First-Team All-Pro honors for the only time in his career. Martin’s greatest accomplishment in the NFL is believed to be the Week Nine performance against the Raiders, who were in Oakland at the time. Martin rushed 25 times for 251 yards and four touchdowns, including scores from 45, 67, and 70 yards away. The two-time Pro Bowler would play his final season in Oakland, replacing the injured Marshawn Lynch, recording two 100-yard games to close out the 2018 season. Martin finished his career with the most yards per game in a career with 74.2, most yards by a rookie RB with 1,454, and multiple records from that Raiders matchup.
The loss of Doug Martin is devastating and is only one of many former stars who have lost their lives way too young. Doug’s life was more than his time on the Buccaneers or the Raiders, but Martin impacted the lives of NFL fans worldwide for his monster rookie season and countless memories of running people over. In the Bucs’ statement on Martin’s passing, the organization continued, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and everyone whom Doug touched throughout his life.” Rest in peace, Doug Martin.
