Unexpected Cut Candidates for the Cowboys 53-Man Roster

NFL

On Tuesday, August 26th, NFL teams around the NFL will go through one of the hardest periods of the year, and that’s deciding who will be on their 53-man roster. No coach or owner likes to cut these men who have worked so hard, putting their body and mind on the line; however, it is a cycle that these teams have to go through every season. This year, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said that there will be surprise cuts to the Cowboys roster. As the Cowboys wrap up their preseason and prepare for their season opener against the Eagles, what are some potential surprise cut candidates for coach Schottenheimer's team?

Sam Williams

While Sam Williams is arguably the most physically gifted player outside of Micah Parsons on the Cowboys, his time in Dallas may come to an end. Williams struggled to display his pass-rushing ability in this preseason, which is his first action since 2023, as he suffered a season-ending injury late into the Cowboys' OTAs last year. With Williams struggling to show his rushing abilities, the surprising rise of James Houston, the former sixth-round pick by the Detroit Lions, has shown a lot of promise this preseason. Recording a sack and multiple quarterback pressures is another reason Williams could lose his roster spot. The Cowboys' edge rushing group is aiming to become one of the best in the NFL, and even the slightest of mishaps could cost a player a roster spot, which is what could happen to Williams.

Miles Sanders

Miles Sanders, early in the offseason, signed a short one-year contract with the Cowboys; however, it seems he might not even be here for the full year. The veteran running back has struggled to demonstrate his value to the Cowboys during the preseason, appearing in three unimpressive games. While the offensive line may share some responsibility for his performances, Sanders has also had difficulty making the right cut or finding the appropriate hole. The performance of rookies Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah is also working against Sanders, as they appear to be gaining an advantage for the final running back spots on the Dallas roster.

Kyle Rivera

Kyle is a passionate sports fan from Illinois attending Joliet Junior College. His aspiration is to one day be able to work in sports for the sports he loves.
