Who Should Be in the Cowboys Backfield Heading into Philadelphia?
The Dallas Cowboys concluded the 2025 NFL Preseason with an impressive 31-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Friday. The offense was firing on all cylinders, with Joe Milton gaining confidence both in the air and on the ground, contributing to the score, and throwing touchdowns in both aspects of the game. Most impressive for the Cowboys was being able to see Texas rookie running back Jaydon Blue in action for the first time all preseason. Blue had an explosive run for 13 yards that displayed his vision and ability to bounce out of the way of his blockers. He would then drive with a one-yard touchdown punch, which was his first touchdown as an NFL player. The Cowboys have several questions as they prepare for week one against Philadelphia, particularly regarding who will make up their backfield.
On the Roster
Heading into this season, the Cowboys will likely decide to carry four running backs, so that leaves room for lots of competition. Who seems to be the clear-cut option as the Cowboys' first choice running is Javonte Williams, the former Denver Bronco. Williams has not participated in preseason thus far, but that further gives him the advantage, as Dallas already knows what they have in him and decides not to risk anything with him. The second choice would ideally be rookie Jaydon Blue, as he gives the Cowboys a dynamic they do not have in the running back group. The third running back, who traditionally can play fullback too, is Hunter Luepke. Luepke provides the Cowboys with a more forceful presence in the backfield. His versatility to play fullback, as well as other positions like tight end, and his ability to serve as a blocker are key factors that will help him secure a spot on the Cowboys roster.
Who Will Be the Last Back?
With Williams, Blue, and Luepke expected to be the top three choices, there is only one remaining spot available in the Dallas backfield. The two names that are the top options for the final running back spot are veteran Miles Sanders and rookie Phil Mafah. If the Cowboys aim to introduce a different dynamic to their offense, Mafah would be the optimal choice and likely the preferred option among fans. Mafah had a solid game versus the Falcons despite having two carries; one was a hard-nosed run for 15 yards, and the other was him scoring a one-yard touchdown. There are other players like Deuce Vaughn and Malik Davis, but those are more likely to be practice-squad players who will be activated if necessary.
