Veteran Point Guard Signs with the Kings
31-year-old veteran point guard Dennis Schröder experienced a whirlwind season, technically spending time with five different organizations. He began the year with the Brooklyn Nets before being traded to the Golden State Warriors, where he was expected to complement Stephen Curry in the backcourt. When that pairing fell short of expectations, he became part of Golden State’s original trade package for Jimmy Butler. From there, he was rerouted to the Utah Jazz and ultimately landed with the Detroit Pistons, all as part of a complex five-team deal that eventually brought Butler to the Warriors. Today it was announced that Schröder would sign with the Sacramento Kings on a three-year deal worth $45 million, looking to continue the late run he had in Detroit.
Originally drafted 17th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2013, Schröder spent five seasons in Atlanta, initially backing up Jeff Teague before earning the starting point guard role by his fourth year. He went on to play for several other teams, including the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Boston Celtics, the Toronto Raptors, and two separate stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, before this season's series of moves. On the international stage, Schröder has been a cornerstone of the German National team, leading them to their first-ever FIBA Basketball World Cup title in 2023 and earning tournament MVP honors for his standout performance, averaging 19.1 points and 6.1 assists per game.
Across the 2024-2025 season, Schröder appeared in 75 games, averaging 13.1 points, 5.4 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 40.6% from the field and 34.2% from three-point range. With Jaden Ivey going down with an injury in early January, Schröder stepped up as a crucial contributor for the Pistons down the stretch. His most memorable moment came in the playoffs, when he posted 20 points and added three assists in a 100–94 Game Two win over the New York Knicks, snapping Detroit’s 15-game postseason losing streak and securing the franchise’s first playoff victory in 17 years. Schröder brings a veteran presence to the backcourt for Sacramento and will look to keep his momentum going into next season.
