What Cowboys Players on a Contract Year Have the Most To Prove?
As the Cowboys approach the 2025 season, many players believe they still have much to prove. Dak Prescott, returning from his injury, is eager to demonstrate that he can regain the MVP form he showcased in 2023. Someone like Trevon Diggs has a lot to prove after dealing with injuries and front office tensions. However, a certain group of players has a lot to prove this year for the Cowboys. The players with expiring contracts aim to demonstrate not only that they belong in Dallas but also that they are worthy of being compensated like elite players in their respective positions.
Sam Williams
Sam Williams was taken way back in the 2022 NFL draft and has shown flashes, but also mental mistakes. His physical traits speak for themselves, as he is arguably the most physically talented player on defense, apart from Micah Parsons. He had high expectations heading into his third season last year; however, a devastating OTA injury ended his season before it even started. Now entering his fourth season, Williams is in his contract year and is playing to get paid. Despite his mental mistakes that cause flags, the plays he can spark can ignite this Dallas defense on any given drive. His talent has always been there; it’s just a matter of keeping his control and being focused when it matters.
George Pickens
It might be his first season in Dallas, but George Pickens has a whole lot to prove entering this year. Similarly to Williams, Pickens was taken back in the 2022 NFL draft and has dealt with scrutiny all throughout his short career. Whether it’s about his on-field behavior that has followed him since being drafted, or doubts regarding his potential to become a genuine star receiver in the NFL. Now he is in a new environment with an elite receiver and quarterback duo next to him to help take off the pressure. Even if he doesn’t resign for Dallas, Pickens has the ability this year to display his talent and show that he is capable of being a star receiver for another team. The Cowboys would prefer him to be in Dallas, and Pickens is ready to give them a reason why.
