What Kept Team USA From Winning It All at the 2026 World Baseball Classic?

MLB

On March 17th, Venezuela won a thrilling game 3-2 against Team USA in the World Baseball Classic final to clinch its first World Baseball Classic title. Japan still leads the WBC title count with three championships, winning in 2006, 2009, and 2023. In 2013, the Dominican Republic won it all. The one time Team USA went the distance was in 2017.

For most teams, achieving second place at an international tournament would be considered an accomplishment. During the medal presentation ceremony at the 2026 WBC, several members of Team USA, including designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., flamethrowing closer Mason Miller, up-and-coming stars Pete Crow-Armstrong and Roman Anthony, as well as Giants ace Logan Webb, were seen taking off their silver medals before leaving the field. The disappointment of defeat and failing to meet expectations is certainly understandable. However, as representatives of the host country and recognized faces of the baseball world, was this the right action to take on the big stage?

Why is it so tough for Team USA to meet and achieve expectations on the international stage? First off, they are always expected to win and win handily against other countries. This mindset seems to be reflected in at least some of the players and their reactions to receiving a silver medal. Maybe it is time to admit that there are many other countries that are just as good at and passionate about baseball as the United States.

It is clear that Team USA had the 2026 WBC circled on their calendars and took the event seriously with a sense of pride and patriotism. However, it is also possible they suffered from a lack of team chemistry. Their up-and-down performances throughout the tournament yield the notion that they did not truly gel as a team, which could be a result of too many cooks in the kitchen, the number of high-profile players who suited up for Team USA. Maybe it is time to admit that simply stacking stars from different MLB teams does not automatically translate to success.

With the 2028 Summer Olympics happening in Los Angeles, it will be a fairly quick turnaround for fans who love the spirit and competition that international baseball brings. Will Team USA be able to recover from the last two WBCs? We shall see. It will be left up to the newly fielded team to face what has happened and write a new chapter for Team USA.
