What the Bears Quarterback Preseason Performance Could Mean
The 2025 NFL preseason has officially wrapped up, and fans are more than ready for the regular season. Many storylines were both answered and created, but some are still left with questions. Quarterback Caleb Williams would have a very interesting preseason for the Chicago Bears. Looking ahead to what may be in store for his sophomore year, his preseason performance may give us some idea of what we could see in his first year under head coach Ben Johnson.
Only playing for two games with minimal snaps, Williams would complete 17 of 25 passes, throwing for 220 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He would look calm and poised in the pocket on nearly every snap he was a part of, something Bears fans wanted to see more of from their former first overall pick. Along with some impressive throws, especially in game one against the Buffalo Bills, Williams would get the ball out fast with a clean pocket. Rookies Colston Loveland and Luther Burden III would be impressive weapons for Williams, providing him with a strong future as the Bears’ franchise quarterback. While the stats were very impressive and Williams showed plenty of growth, they don’t tell the full story.
Despite a good performance against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night, Williams would only begin to perform well against the Chiefs’ backups after the starters were taken out. Against the Chiefs’ starters, it would be tough sledding as they were unable to get much going with a fumble and penalties plaguing them. For Bears fans, this became an eye-opener for some, reminding them this is still a first-year offense under a brand new head coach. The hiccups were definitely there, and will need to be cleaned up if Chicago wants an impressive first year for Ben Johnson. Luckily for the Bears, there were still better flashes than there ever were last season, and a much better offensive line for Williams to operate with. With the Bears’ first matchup against the Minnesota Vikings in just two weeks, it looks like Williams is in store for a very interesting sophomore season.
