What Will Be the Fate of a 24-Year-Old Rookie 2026 Blue Jay When Barger and Lukes Return from the IL?

MLB

When Addison Barger briefly returned from his ankle injuries on May 10th, Yohendrick Piñango was sent back to the Minors to make room on the roster. After that same game, Barger was put back on the IL with a brand-new elbow injury, and the rookie got a second chance. Piñango was originally welcomed to the show after Nathan Lukes joined the IL with left hamstring discomfort on April 25th. Great hitting, corner outfield positions, and left-handed hitting are what connect these three players. It doesn’t make sense to have so many similar players taking up space on one roster. Jesús Sánchez is also in that conversation, in addition to Davis Schneider, though he stands out by batting righty and also covering middle infield. The other two lefties on the team are Andrés Giménez and Daulton Varsho, but they’ve been too good to go anywhere.

After a month in Toronto, the left-handed hitting prospect has made his way to the clean-up spot with a .295 AVG, which shows his manager believes in his abilities. Does this mean John Schneider wants the rookie to keep his spot on the 23-man roster? In his most recent game, the 24-year-old had a .667 AVG and a 1.667 OPS. Piñango is leading the team in batting average and OPS, though it’s not exactly an even comparison because he’s only had a fraction of the at-bats of his teammates who have played the whole season. He has, however, played about the same number of games as Lukes before he was injured. The 31-year-old had a .250 AVG and a .613 OPS over 52 at-bats. Barger had even fewer chances to build his stats and only earned a .045 AVG with a .305 OPS. With both lefties starting their rehab assignments soon, the Blue Jays will have to make some tough decisions.

With their crowded IL, the Blue Jays have needed many rookies on their roster this year, including catcher Brandon Valenzuela, whose spot is also at risk as Silver Slugger and two-time all-star Alejandro Kirk’s return approaches, and most recently, LHP Adam Macko. However, the injured players were a part of their postseason success in 2025, and despite a recent winning streak, Toronto has struggled this season. They may not feel ready to move on to the next generation when they got so close to a World Series Title last October. Despite the promise these rookies have shown, they may develop better with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons when the rest of the roster is healthy.
