Will the Giants 22-Year-Old Receiver Be Ready for Action in 2026?

NFL

A big problem is brewing for the New York Giants. There's a big question facing the G-men entering the offseason. This isn't about Jaxson Dart's development or new coach John Harbaugh's first stint in New York. While those have been thoughts from fans and executives alike, the biggest question has surrounded the Giants' star pass catcher: When will star receiver Malik Nabers be cleared to play?

Last season, the 22-year-old phenom tore his ACL as well as his meniscus during Week Four of the 2025 NFL season. Nabers’ entire offseason has been dedicated to preparing for a comeback at the start of the 2026 season. This gruesome injury ended what looked like another great season for the young star out of LSU. He only played in four games last year, but during his rookie season, the 22-year-old exploded with more than 1,200 yards and cemented himself as the Giants' top target.

The problem concerning the 22-year-old's recovery has come to light this week. Head coach John Harbaugh even said himself that the recovery time is “not simple.” Nabers had another surgery recently to take out scar tissue from his knee, and now this could set him back even more. The organization hasn't given a specific estimate for a return, but let's just say it's not looking good. This is not something the Giants need right now, as the former LSU wideout is the one they primarily rely on when on offense. Other weapons on the team do not have the same raw ability as him. While New York does have some other names on the roster that can take his spot till he gets back, none of them have ever been the top targets before, and all are new additions. Darnell Mooney, Malchi Fields, or Calvin Austin seem to be the guys to pave the way in the air attack to start the season. The question is, can they do that without having experience in this offense?

Even if Nabers does return early on, reports have come out that he probably won't be back to 100 percent right away. This would mean limited snaps for an important playmaker. If the 22-year-old deems Week One healthy, the Giants' offense will look very dangerous. His newfound chemistry with signal-caller Dart is something fans are waiting to see, and it could completely transform this team. Until he steps on the field, expect more headlines regarding Nabers to dominate NFL media because he is the biggest question mark on whether the Giants make a playoff push or not.
