What's Next for the Story of Cody Rhodes?

Cody Rhodes lost his WWE Championship at WrestleMania to John Cena a few weeks ago, which caused Cody to go on a long hiatus. Rhodes has been advertised for the May 16th episode of SmackDown. What will he talk about? Will he challenge John Cena to a rematch for his WWE Championship, whether that’s at Money in the Bank or at the first-ever two-night SummerSlam? Could Cody possibly tease his Codylander character and turn heel, something that fans have been anticipating since Rhodes’ return to WWE?

One option for ‘The American Nightmare’ when he returns is to face Seth Rollins. During the main event of WrestleMania XLI Night One, Rollins turned heel, leading to the creation of this new interesting stable with Paul Heyman and Bron Breakker by his side. Will Cody confront Seth about his actions over the last month? After the new faction attacked Sami Zayn, perhaps Rhodes is the faction's next target, even though they're both on different shows.

Could losing the title possibly tease a heel turn for Cody? The Rock has been wanting Cody to sell his soul since the Elimination Chamber PLE in March. Fans have been wanting Cody to be a villain for a long time since his run in the AEW, and it may be the perfect opportunity to begin a heel turn since returning to WWE. ‘The American Nightmare’ making Homelander-type promos could be what sparks interest in Rhodes' character.

Could a match between CM Punk and Cody happen at any future PLE? We know Punk is trying to challenge for a world title, so a match can possibly set up a number-one contender’s match for both wrestlers. If not, will the drama be built up in such suspense where both men want to brawl with one another? Will their egos be in the way of stopping Cena’s 17th championship reign?

Which options for Cody Rhodes make the most sense at the moment? Cena, Rollins, and Punk are some great choices within the story of ‘The American Nightmare. Could these options work out for Cody? Winning the title against Cena could help him bring out the moment he had when he finished his story at WrestleMania 40. In a completely different direction, could Rhodes go after the US Championship, facing Jacob Fatu for the title at Money in the Bank? If Cody won the United States Championship, it would make him a Grand Slam champion in the WWE.
