Which Championship Teams Are More Likely to Get Promoted for the 26-27 Season of the Premier League?

The relegation battle is always ruthless. A lot has been said about Tottenham descending to the realms of the EFL Championship League, and Wolves and Burnley leading that march to relegation. However, it is also true that for the three teams that leave the Premier League each year, three more teams come in. The lucky three who get promoted get a chance to prove themselves in one of the most competitive club leagues in the world. The new faces that you will be seeing in next year’s Premier League are still not fully decided; some seem to be getting ahead in the race to promotion.

EFL Championship Fast Facts

The Championship may not be as prestigious as its older sibling, the Premier League, but it does have some qualities of its own. The UK’s second division is quite popular, being the 12th most attended division in world soccer, with sturdy financial resources and a loyal fan base. From a 24-team cohort, the best two teams are promoted to the Premier League, and the teams placed third through sixth enter a playoff tournament in which the winner also gets promoted. The bottom three-placing teams also get relegated to the EFL League One, which is the third-tier division in English soccer.

Coventry Secures a Place in the Premier League

This season’s Championship was led by a wide margin by Coventry, earning the team the Championship win earlier today. The West Midlands-based team demonstrated their quality against Wrexham this Sunday with a 3-1 win over the Red Dragons. Managed by none other than three-time Premier League champion and UEFA Champions League winner, Frank Lampard, the Sky Blues have officially secured a place in next season’s Premier League. After staying unbeaten for seven games, they have made it to their first Premier League in 25 years.

Ipswich Town Still on Track

The next positions are still to be decided. Ipswich Town seems the most likely contender to obtain the second automatic qualifying spot. The Tractor Boys are set to play against Southampton this upcoming Tuesday, a game that, if won, would secure their spot in the highest tier of English soccer. The team was relegated from the Premier League last year and is hoping to get back on it again. This could be the end of a single consecutive season in the Championship if they manage to win against fifth-place Southampton.

Playoff Prospects

The teams that are entering the playoffs are Millwall, Middlesbrough, Southampton, and Wrexham, respectively. If things stay exactly as they are now, Millwall will be playing Wrexham, and Southampton will be facing Middlesbrough for a spot in the playoff finals. The first legs will be taking place on May 8th and 9th, with the second leg taking place on May 11th and 12th. The final will be on May 23rd at Wembley Stadium. Whoever wins will be playing at the Premier next year.

Final Thoughts

Access to the Premier League not only means more prestige but also more financial support. The playoff finals will be a game that will entail much more than just status in the world of soccer. It will certainly be an exciting match to watch as the season comes to an end. Fans can rest assured that if their team didn’t make the playoffs, they will have another opportunity next year.
