Which Padres Bat Will Have the Biggest Impact in the 2026 MLB Postseason?
After months of waiting, we have finally reached the best time of the year for baseball fans across the nation. The 2026 MLB Postseason finally gets underway this week. For some, that means celebration and stress as they watch their favorite team sweat it out in the most important games of their season. For others, it spells doom and gloom as they watch other teams duke it out while waiting for the next season. San Diego Padres fans across the world have the massive privilege of being in the first half of fans. The Friars completed an awesome mid-season turnaround thanks to a dominant second half, carried by resurgent stars such as their three-time all-star in the outfield. As a result, they finished with the top National League Wild Card spot and 91 wins. The Padres are hot, but entering the playoffs is a different animal.
Ty France: The X-Factor
It’s extremely hard to believe that Ty France was just a minor league signing at the start of this season. He responded to the low expectations set on him with a career year. France coupled his usually solid first base defense with stellar offensive production. The 32-year-old posted an OPS of .865 in 133 games, giving him a WAR of 4.5. His OPS mark ranked better than bona fide stars like Kyle Schwarber and CJ Abrams. His 86th-percentile hard-hit percentage proves the performance is not a fluke. Entering postseason play, France will be key on both sides of the ball to allow the Friars to make a true push.
Manny Machado: The Captain
For better or for worse, Manny Machado will be key to this 2026 Padres playoff run. The man they have deemed the captain had an interesting 2026 regular season. It was difficult to determine if 2026 could have been considered a successful season for the long-time Padre, but one thing is certain: he will be needed in the playoffs. Machado hit just .217 through 158 games for the Friars while also posting a .303 OBP. Both were well below his usual expectations, with career marks of .274 and .335 in each of those categories. Despite the poor on-base and average numbers, the former Oriole still posted his usual power numbers, swatting 30 home runs. The three-time Silver Slugger Award winner has a career postseason OPS of just .682, however. It is certainly true that the Padres will need their veteran leader to step up this fall.
Fernando Tatís Jr.: The Superstar
By far the most consistently great playoff performer and most needed to allow the Padres to have a deep run is Fernando Tatís Jr. The Friars' electric outfielder has 16 playoff appearances under his belt to this point. In those 16 games, he has an OPS of 1.114 with a ridiculous six home runs. Momentum is on the 27-year-old’s side as well. The former shortstop struggled immensely to start the year, only to finish with a 25-home-run, 38-stolen-base campaign. He also posted an OPS of .828, his highest in a non-injury-riddled season since 2021. That offensive resurgence, coupled with good-to-great defense at two separate positions, gave him 4.3 WAR in the regular season. Tatís capped his season off with an incredible month of September, essentially prepping him for October baseball. France and Machado are crucial, yet this team runs through Tatís in the postseason; to say he will be leaned on would be an understatement.
