Who May Be On the Chopping Block for the Bills as They Enter Training Camp?
The Buffalo Bills' season is fast approaching, yet their 53-man roster has yet to be solidified. Training camp begins this week, and speculation is mounting over which players will make the final cut. Despite earlier evaluations at minicamps and OTAs, it remains anyone's game; no position is truly safe. Here are a few players that may find themselves on the chopping block this season.
Mitchell Trubisky, QB
While Mitch Trubisky has proven himself a decent backup to the team's star QB Josh Allen, he is facing stiff competition this season. The Bills recently signed Mike White from the practice squad, and his performance at minicamps turned heads. White made many impressive throws, landing himself on the team's highlight reel. Another significant factor influencing this QB competition is the team's salary cap hits. Trubisky is getting paid $3.25 million, which takes up a lot more cap space than White’s $1.195 million. Trubisky will have to deliver at training camp to hold on to the backup QB spot.
Dane Jackson, CB
Dane Jackson has spent four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, as well as a brief stint with the Carolina Panthers. Now back in Buffalo, he's fighting to reclaim a cornerback position. However, the outlook isn’t too promising. The Bills added both Maxwell Hairston and Dorian Strong in the draft to join the CB rotation, adding fierce competition in the secondary. Jackson’s release could free up some much-needed salary cap space as well. He will need to make a strong impression and some impressive stops during training camp to get off the chopping block.
Larry Ogunjobi, DT
The Buffalo Bills signed Larry Ogunjobi to a one-year contract back in March; however, he was almost immediately hit with a six-game suspension for violating the league's policies involving performance-enhancing drugs. As a potential response, the team signed two defensive tackles in the 2025 NFL Draft, T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker. Additionally, defensive tackles Marcus Harris and Casey Rogers were signed, putting Ogunjobi’s spot in jeopardy. If these rookies play well at training camp, the team could choose to move on from Ogunjobi after his six-week suspension.
