Why a 23-Year-Old Quarterback Needs to Start in Week Seven Over Jameis Winston for the 2026 Giants

NFL

The New York Giants did not remain undefeated at MetLife Stadium in their matchup against the New Orleans Saints. They fell 34-27, marking their second loss of the season. What started as a decent game, with New York scoring first, quickly turned into a sloppy, one-sided affair. Many errors were made on the field. One of them was the Giants’ current starting quarterback, Jameis Winston, who couldn’t get anything going for New York.

Winston and Big Blue had trouble getting points on the board after the Giants’ first drive of the game. In the first three quarters, the veteran quarterback was on the field only five times before the Giants finally started moving the ball. The Giants scored on a running touchdown and a field goal in the first half. The team was basically eaten alive at the end of the first half when Charlie Jones fumbled, and the Saints took over to score their first touchdown of the game before halftime.

In the second half, the 2015 first-round pick threw two interceptions. Overall, the Big Blue had four ugly turnovers against the Saints. Winston could not find his footing at all in this matchup. Over the last few weeks, he has slowly faltered, starting in Week Two when head coach John Harbaugh put him in after Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending injury. The veteran quarterback appeared in the last five games, winning two, losing two, and tying one. The veteran has gone 90 for 158 passes, with a 57 percent completion rate. It hasn’t been the smartest move the Giants have made yet, because he's faltered. Winston has shown up in the last quarter of every game to try to make a comeback. The rollercoaster with this quarterback seems to have ended, which is what many fans hoped for when they sat him down in the fourth quarter of today's game.

In the fourth quarter against New Orleans, Harbaugh had no choice but to pull his starting quarterback, who has led the Giants for the last several games, and insert J.J. McCarthy. The young quarterback, who was signed at the end of September, seemed to make a difference the minute he entered the game. In Week Five, the 23-year-old played a few snaps, but it backfired. Big Blue pulled him and then put Winston back in. It may have started ugly for this 2024 first-round pick, but the Giants seem to have found the light they've been looking for. McCarthy threw one interception in this game, but he made up for it while he had time on the field. The young quarterback threw 11 out of 21 passes for 243 yards. He threw the touchdown the Giants had been looking for all game, but they couldn't find it earlier.

In Week Seven, Big Blue needs to decide on a quarterback because Winston isn't the answer for the rest of the season. After the matchup against New Orleans, where he couldn't get anything going, it’s time to put him back on the bench. The veteran quarterback is also 32 years old and is starting to show signs that he can't perform like he used to. Winston won the 2013 Heisman Trophy at Florida State before moving on to the NFL. Shortly after starting in the NFL, his downfall began, and he has become a backup for every team he's played for over his career.

McCarthy is young, healthy, and getting a taste of what it’s like to be an official starter for New York’s play-calling position. This young quarterback is what Big Blue needs. The 2024 first-round pick has spent the last few weeks learning the Giants' plays and just needs time to show what he can do. McCarthy plays a lot like Dart. He is just as much of a triple threat as the Giants’ starting quarterback is. New York needs to think this position over before heading into next week to take on the Houston Texans down south.
