Why a 28-Year-Old Wide Receiver is the Giants Most Underlooked Signing in 2026

NFL

The New York Giants didn't have the strongest offseason, but they definitely didn't disappoint. While news outlets have focused on big star signings such as Mike Evans, Jaylen Waddle, and  Trey Hendrickson, other signings have been extremely underlooked. For the New York Giants, this was the case when they signed 28-year-old wide receiver Darnell Mooney to a one-year, $10 million deal. While Mooney may not be a “game-changing” player, he could end up having a huge impact on the Giants' 2026 season.

The Giants are a young team that is still trying to build themselves into playoff contention. With young signal caller Jaxon Dart continuing to get better, New York needs veteran players who can still make an impact. That's right where Mooney comes in. The 28-year-old brings speed, route running, and experience. While Mooney is coming off a shaky season in Atlanta, where he played 15 games and put up 443 yards and a touchdown. He was playing on a team that lost its starting quarterback in Week 11 and had barely any good quarterback play the entire season. Throughout his career, Mooney has been a solid wide receiver, even having two seasons with over 950 receiving yards, with one being only two seasons ago. He is the type of player who understands defenses and provides big play ability, making him crucial in big moments.

With the 28-year-old, this means Dart will have a receiver who can create separation with ease and help him when he needs a big play made late in a game. The Giants struggled in close games last season, with them losing five one-score games. Adding somebody who can deliver in these moments aside from Malik Nabers will be huge and could be that extra push for more wins come next season. Make no mistake, Nabers is going to be the focus of this receiving core, but what makes Mooney such a great move is how great he will help out the Giants' star receiver. This signing makes all the giants' wishes come true. They get an experienced receiver who isn't yet past his prime. Productive with a limited target and able to take a backseat to Nabers. While this signing isn't media outpouring news, don't be surprised if, down the line, it gets talked about as one of Big Blue's smartest moves of the offseason.
