Why Is the Future of Men’s Golf Shaky?
The future can be bright or dark depending on your current state. We can’t deny that, and the unknown is truly unknown. The hope of a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf currently signals that no progress is being made in the merger. Fans of the sports offered a sign of relief when the merger announcement was made, but two years in, and nothing has come out. The questions of what’s going on and what will happen are lingering under the public eye, where feelings of gloom are emerging as time passes by, and the failure of a merger is becoming more likely. The ramifications of no compromise may offer a bleak and possibly chaotic future.
The merger is a solution to the many issues in the world of men’s golf. The different leagues only offer confusion for a young, talented prodigy to make his decision regarding this question: Do I go to the traditional league of the previous generations, or go to the new league where past PGA greats are still playing and offer more money? The idea of choosing a golf league should never have existed in the first place. The question of why these golfers choose different leagues shouldn’t exist, and only gives us more questions. The choice itself is a disdain for the state of men’s golf right now.
The acknowledgement that LIV exists due to the PGA’s incompetence and lackluster promotion of its future stars shows how the game of golf also relies on Tiger Woods. Woods, through his dominant run, seems to bring on laziness and incompetence among the heads of the PGA Tour. The players of this game also have to be accountable for the current state of this sport. No one is to blame for a player taking more money to another league, but knowing that you are willing to join inferior competition and possibly disregarding the social ramifications of joining the LIV only adds to the division in sports. The only hope for the future may be the merger or partial agreements in the case of the merger failing.
